GSDtravels

I've just recently come across information on my great grandmother's family history dating back to approximately 1650.  It's taking me days to sort through it all, but it's one of the most facsincting documents I've ever read.  Italians are great at record keeping and even though the town was bombed in 1943, virtually destroying the church, and what was left of the town then destroyed in a subsequent earthquake, many church and civic records remained.  I even have a street address for my great great great great great great grandfather!

So, with all of the pedigree research that is done for the dogs, I thought it would be kind of cool to see how many of us can trace our own family history.  How far back can your roots be traced?

Oops, I'm sorry, I meant to post this in "off-topic".  If one of the mods could move it, I would appreciate it.

Travels I love geneology.  Seriously had you grown up with my grandmother you would know it all--in 2 different languages--whether you wanted to or not!!!!  My paternal grandparents raised me--I know nothing about my birth mother except where she was from. On my grandmother--we have gone back on her mother's side to the late 1500's. On her father's side to the 1830's, when his grandparents came here-OK-on the trail of tears. On my grandfather's side back to the early 1600's.
I have a favorite cousin and she and I are constantly " digging"--we recently scanned and exchanged photos!!!  Isn't it fun?  My cousin in CA-we are related through my grt grandfather--who was his grandfather-recently did a geneology family book and here are a couple of pics I scanned from there. The top pic is my grt uncle and the bottom his father holding my grandmother in 1893.

PS Of course I never knew my grt grandfather but my Uncle Julius was one of my favorite family members and I have nothing but great memories of him.

Fantastics pics, that is too cool!  You're right, it's really fun to trace back that far.

I now have many branches of ancestors to trace because all of the women's maiden names are included in this and the town records are pretty complete, so it should be a lifetime work, but doable!

I'm going to see my Dad tomorrow and he has family pics of his grandparents and extended family.  I'm going to start putting all of the names together with the photos and start a family album.  My grandfather died when I was 2, so I never got to know him, but I have many stories about him from my father and his sisters.  The one thing I hear the most about him?  He was a dog person :)

Now I'll start on my great grandfather and put it all together.

*Thanks for moving this, mrdarcy!

Yeah I came back to look around and noticed you had been moved!!!!
Also I wanted to tell you you might want to check out Ancestry.com and Roots.com.  Yes they have a deal where you have to pay BUT there is a lot of free info on there.  I know the Ancestry one has forums and tho it is sort of slow going you can sift through stuff and find out lots.  I found some cousins of my grandfather and found out a lot of things that way.  Another thing to do is just google or yahoo people's names and read through the results. Again that's how I found my grandfather's first ancestor and when and where he came to the US and how the whole family got started.  Also another resource is the Mormons in Salt Lake City, UT.  They have a lot of records on file and not all of them are Mormons.
Good for you your dad is still alive and has pics.  I love old pics.  What a great way to spend a Father's Day, visiting and talking about relations and looking at pics.
Hey my grandfather was a dog breeder and was known big time in this area for his dogs.  So WE--you and I --must come by it genetically!!!!!
Have fun--you never know who you might be related to.  And post some updates--I'd be interested in knowing how it's going...............
