In home cooked food with beef and rice can we add iodised salt? Is salt neccessary and why?

I've heard that salt in any form is a big no! my wife won't add it to the pooch' diet because her grandma says so. None of the home cooked food we prepare for our pooch contains salt. Maybe someone can shed light on the true facts.

Most dogfood in the market has salt content, it is another way of preserving the product.
