When I was a kid, there was no history of tornadoes here in Pittsburgh.  It was explained to me that the mountains break them up, there's no flat land here.  Our weather patterns have changed drastically since then, typically less snow in winter (although the last two have been the exception), more severe storms in summer.   There were many warnings for a tornado last night, but none materialized.  The body of that storm hit about 50 miles north, in Mercer and Venango Counties and though there was no tornado, there was still plenty of wind damage in the way of fallen trees and such.  I don't think we'd ever see devastation like what happened in Joplin... very, very sad.

Thanks Travels for sharing that.  Answers my question.  Sorry about the wind damage those guys got but atleast there were no tornadoes.  You know it does seem the weather pattern has really changed and everything is so much more intense.  Like all the snow we had this years--days of it--very unusual.......By the way the big storms we were supposed to get missed us but I have the news on now and a community near Oklahoma City called Piedmont looks like it got hit pretty bad.....................

Here is video taken by a person who was amongst a group who took shelter inside a gas station, as the Joplin, Missouri tornado hit.  Not much for visuals but the audio is bone chilling.  They huddled together in the beer cooler:

Here is the video the same guy took of the gas station showing the aftermath.   Unbelievable destruction and incredible they got out alive:

I don't even believe the weather here in the Sacramento Valley right now: 60's, Severe T-storms, lightening, 1/2" hail, and yes, TORNADO WARNINGS all over local TV stations. In JUNE??? I was born and raised here in Northern California, and I have never heard of anything bigger than a dust bunny rolling across the cotton fields 'way down I-5 outside Bakersfield. One tornado actually touched down just north of here last week, destroyed a large garage.
Global warming huh? We aren't exactly running the A/C here. Its been 20+ degrees below normal, with quite a bit of rain for a couple of weeks. Yup, lots of snow in the mountains, still coming down at least till tomorrow.

Weird.

Uh oh. We're about to get hammered here in Sutter County in a few minutes. No word tornado warnings here... yet...
No BBQ tonight.
