I (J. D. Johnson)decided to buy the very best bulldogs that I could find to begin my own kennel, but I was limited financially as to how many dogs I could buy and adequately care for. The dogs I did purchase at this time I tried to make the very best and so between 1949 and the early 1950's, I purchased some dogs that to me represented the largest, strongest, and best American Bulldogs that I could find. one of my best early foundation dogs was Johnson's Bobo and he came from Calhoun, Georgia.

John D. Johnson purchased Dick the Bruiser around 1956 or 57. He bought him from Harold Lassiter on Big Sand Mountain in Alabama. He was a catch dog and one of his all time favorites. Bruiser has no known back ground or pedigree however Johnson made one up to be able to reg. him with NKC.
Bruiser was a respectable 75-85 lb. bulldog. And a great inspiration to the breed. Although Dick the Bruiser was used in Mr. Johnson's breeding program, Mr. Alan Scott also used him in his breeding program, we find that Mr. Alan Scott found his perfect American Bulldog in Ch. Gr. Ch. Scott's Dixieman "Buster" a son of Dick the Bruiser.
