And some young males can show very strong dominance from the get go. I have seen 12 weeks old puppies that put up a fight every time they have to be put up in crate.

In my opinion, the OP did the right thing. I don't think he had the right dog if his main goal is to compete in IPO. Better to place the dog into a more suitable home rather than waste time and effort trying to achieve that which the dog is not well equipped to do. Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying this dog couldn't do IPO. Matter of fact, I think this dog could be titled in IPO, but it would be a challenge for a newbie in the sport and most likely he would not achieve high scores in the obedience phase.

The OP stated that he wanted a dog with balanced drives, one that could do well in IPO with some seriousness. Looking at this dog's pedigree, I would have passed on the pup if what I wanted was balanced drives and competing in IPO. The dog has a nice pedigree, but it is heavy on Don vom Rolandsteich, which is not the ideal dog for IPO. The sire line is very prepotent which is why you get the typical nice dark sable color and nice head, however I think the dominance and lack of biddability also come with it. I don't see the Czech dogs adding balance to the pedigree either, as the old Czech lines were more renowned for their aggression.

If I were the breeder, I probably would have told the OP to look somewhere else, if he had told me his main goal was to compete in IPO with the puppy. I say this because I would not have done this breeding with IPO sport in mind.
