Personally I never had one live much past the age of eleven (11) years. I agree with Dog1 that anything after ten (10) years is a bonus. I think as long as one does the preliminary tests that he describes and maintains the dog in proper health then ten (10) years should be easily attainable. I agree that a puppy (or ten puppies) is a crapshoot at best, and it is best to go for an older puppy or a young dog who can be tested with some definite results.

We do not have a member of the Lucky 13 club yet and it will be nearly three years before our oldest bitch passes twelve (12) years of age. If she does then she will be the first of ours to do so. I wish they could all make the club.

Regards,

Bob-O

Hi Ms. President Rose!  I picked up 3 adults in Germany and Belgium, no pups.  I saw a really cute DDR pup while I was there but didn't buy him...does that count?  If Sportsfan knows his seller, then there's no problem with shipping, and it would be cheaper than flying over.  If, however, he wanted to buy TWO or THREE pups, to choose one over the other two, and then sell the other two, the trip over would be less than shipping if he only went for a couple of days.  Everything is pretty close by in Germany, so he should be able to conduct all his business in two days and go home with three dogs.  I brought back four dogs on Delta...three adults and one European Boxer pup for a friend of mine. Or maybe, if he has friends, he could go and pick up dogs and come back while breaking even on the trip for himself, and saving money and anxiety for his friends.  Just an idea.  ~ Veronica

Howdy there, Mrs V Pres Elect Veronica:  You are the best....services rendered...you ought to start a Gsd Shopping Guide" from your Alaska snowbound mountain cliff.....Germany is an interesting place and I should have been more aware , when I traveled there many years ago, but mine was just a 10 day tour of 6 countries.....and I was a widow in grief and could have cared less about a dog , except when I saw so many , in the streets and resteraunts, i had to pet them.....I know you can tell people how personal hands on is a good thing.....Hows the tiny one???????

Dan,

You're in luck. There are a couple good people there in your area that can help you train/show whatever you decide to get. It's good that you're aware breeders rarely sell their best on purpose unless you are a show home or have something to offer for future benefit to the breeder such as puppies, breeding rights, co ownership, etc.

I wouldn't sell out the American breeders just yet. Check out the results from the recent North American Sieger Show and the American Bred dogs did better than the imports in the younger classes. There are many excellent litters being bred right here in the US. There's a lot to choose from starting around 1,500. Find the US breeders that have the good females and start your search there. (Here's a clue. The ones you find easiest on the internet are most likely not the best. They may be the best website,,,,but look at the results from shows and trials to see which ones really have their act together.)

Many of the breeders have a program you can be a part of and will assist with training and showing. Start local as distance is a factor when it comes time to train. Good luck!

Thanks all for the continued input. I really appreciate it more than you know.

Bob-o: Thanks for the information I will probably get pups for my boys and maybe a an older one for myself in due time.

Yellowrose I will PM you as I am interested to hear more and really like that you took the time to commend someone else which by the way I heard of them I believe they are from Amarillo right? Plus they had a high-ranked dog (VA) but the name escapes me at the moment. When I first started following shows etc they were one of the first ones I heard about.

AKVeronica60: As far as the breeder I really dont "know" them per say just a few emails exchanged but believe their kennels to be reputable. The VA Quenn pup I am waiting to decide on will be born by the end of this month and the breeder or person I have been talking with is Andrea Betz. Quenn has been bred to Renee Haus Tepferd.

The other pup is from the Status Quo kennel (VA1 Zamp X SG 26 bszs 2007 Riska V Wittelsbacher Schloss) ( VA1 Pakros daughter) and the person I am dealing with their is Bernd Nagel. They (the pups) are on the ground already and we'll be following up as they should be ready mid-Jan 2008.

I have also inquired to a couple others including "Arlett" and "Zomerdijksladen" kennels as well as a couple others in the UK and USA. Anyway thanks again as I appreciate any guidance in the right direction.

Sincerely,

Dan

Longevity.  11, 12 and 13 respectively in my dogs cases. 2 passed away from spleen related cancers, and one from "old age".  2 were from show lines, and one from working lines.

I am blessed, and I know it. I have a german show import that tomorrow will turn 13! She is still in excellent health, with no signs at all of arthritis! I have two of her daughters as well. One, who recently turned 11 and one that will be 4 in a couple months. The 11 year old is in excellent health, except she doesn't chase the ball as fast as her soon to be 3 year old son. She just lets him win now.

We know how blessed we are, and that every day with mother and daughter is icing on the cake!  There are lines out there that are known for longevity, especially the females.

The 10 year prognosis bums me out.  That would mean to me that longevity is going down.

I owned a showline female that turned 12 years and one month and was an active member of the household until her last breath.  She just fell asleep and never woke up again.

And now I have an girl 9 1/2 years that does not look or behave any way like an old girl and I anticipate still many more happy years with her.  She comes with me everywhere I take my other dogs and I still track her, use her as a second dog for long down stays etc. You figure, she was out of rescue and has been healthy except for a rough start in the beginning.

Terry is a very nice person and has excellent dogs.  Jennifer Aguilar in Whitesboro (vom Tal der Schatten) is also a breeder of fine GSDs.  Jennifer's club does show training Saturday mornings, so you might want to check her out.

A puppy is indeed a crap shoot.  I was one of the fortunate ones that raised an 8 week old puppy and went the whole way with him.  But sometimes puppy owners are not realistic and quickly disappointed if their dogs don't win their classes or wind up way in the back.  If you intend to do this with a puppy, remember that the road is long and bumpy and by the time your dog matures, there may be a whole different type of dog that the judge's are looking for.  But I will say this, it is very rewarding and can be a road with many lessons not only about canine behavior but human also.   Speaking for myself, the bond I have to the puppy I raised, is very evident.  I know him very well and he knows me and we are in it together for better of for worse.

I purchased an 18 month female and had her shown in Germany and titled.  I had a litter with her.  But the bond I had with any of my other dogs is not the same with her.  I mean training and working with the dog is magic for both dog and handler.  It is very gratifying.

We are in the Metroplex too.  The South Central Regional should be coming up in the first quarter of next year.  Hope to see you there.
