Just curious, I've spoken offline to several breeders who use the SV quarterly CD for researching HD probablity in mating pairs prior prior to making breeding decisions. I've been told that this is not actually common practice. I was wondering how many members (and how often) use the Genetics CD to research dogs, mating pairs and progeny. Please be specific as to *why* you use the CD if you do. Thanks, -Calvin

If you want some sage advice on how to use that CD to it's fullest potential, I suggest you contact D.H. on this board. Many people think they have a handle on the CD, because they have to learned to navigate through the CD to get "desired" information(like me, before being enlightened). To put that information in context and use it to it's fullest potential is another story. D.H. can put it in it's proper context for you. Stephen

Using and evaluating the info contained in the SV-Genetics database, can only be one tiny part of the homework one needs to do. It says nothing about the size, the bone structure, the front, the croupe, the angulation, the color, the nerves, the drives, etc., etc. of the dogs. Moreover, most likely the best breedingpartners suggested for your dog will live at the other side of the world, so it might only be usefull for people living in areas where there are a lot of potential partners. Before breeding, there is a lot of homework to be done, and the "sv-genetics" is just a tool. Worth checking of course, but one does not start breeding based on the info contained therein.

My point is that after just learning of it (and it seem like a great tool) someone I would expect to heavily leverage it told me that they didn't know anyone who used it. The statement caught me off guard and for curiosities sake I'm doing a personal survey as to to who uses it and who doesn't. It's funny that the justification for not using was "name a big kennel that does." Now that I'm aware of the tool I'd submit that anyone not using is acting less then professionally – but that is my opinion - I tend to lean towards the more technical side of things. -Calvin

Calvin, I know some breeders of big kennels/big name kennels that do not even own a computer. They could not re-boot a computer. It is just a tool that is available. For many years dogs(great dogs) were bred before the database was established. Stephen

I would love to see you tell the breeders of "Von Batu" that they are less than professional, because they don't use that genetics CD(sarcastically joking).

I use the CD, it is especially helpful when researching dogs put up for sale in Germany. When told "she" has had three litters of 8, one can determine if there were indeed three litters and how many pups were in each. You have to keep in mind that the pups have to be old enough to appear on the disc and it only comes out quarterly. I use it to look at the HD status of the dog. I can use it to try figure out which dog someone is trying to sell when they won't give you the name of the dog. Also to look at a particular stud dog's progeny's hip status. It is a very useful tool in my opinion. Jennifer, Vom Tal der Schatten.

all information may be useful in finding a stud, when its all put togather it only helps if the female being bred has the genetics to go with the males genetics. the breeders who know the lines have the advantage. techinal help .............maybe, not likely.

So is it irresponsible to not use it? Especially since it is so easy and readily available? At least for HD validation? What would someone do otherwise? I'm trying to determine how frequently or not it is used for at least verifying dogs for sale or checking HD probability while screening potential mating pairs. I'm trying to arrive at an understanding that if someone knew of it and did not use it they would be irresponsible or not? I should not have interjected my personal opinion as it is not relevant to what I am trying to determine. I’m also not suggesting that it be used instead of good hard work and knowledge of the parents to determine a suitable pair – I’m really only looking at this from the HD angle. -Calvin
