I have female about two years old about to go in heat. I live in teh Minneapolis area were it has been in the 90 plus the usual high humidity. She usually has a very strong food drive but since yesterday which just so happened to be the hottest day she wanted nothing to due with food and was eating grass and vomitting yellow cler bile with grass and nothing else. Any ideas or comments would be much apprecaited before vet appt???

well I will feed my dogs very early in the morning and later at night when it is still cool, add water and keep lots of water for the dog...It is so hot right now (I am in TX) and they don't want to eat. I also have them in the A/C when they eat, and don't let them out for a few hours after they eat... Heather

My dogs like Ice Cubes, so I make gatorade ice cubes for them to munch on, I pour in small butter bowls and freeze ,pop them out and then give to the dogs, they like them, plus the can push them around. I have them on the patio or in the kitchen on the linoleum, cause it is messy, but a good way to keep their electrolytes up, as they don't like to eat in this heat. I feed them about 10 pm and 6 am portions so they have digested well before the extreme heat of the day, it was 102 in NE Montana yesterday, and the dogs lounged in the living room in front of the A/C all day.

Hey Doomsaver, I know the whether I grew up in the state, had dogs all my life there. Now I am where it is even warmer! I also spent many summers in the Mountains of Montanna with my dogs and the heat there can be NASTY as well! Although this is not uncommon, what others have said is great here is what I do in various situations. Feed Early, and Feed Later at night. I try to feed between 6 and 8 AM in the mornings and around 7-10 at night depending on the temp. Throughout the day I leave a kiddie pool available when I am home that i change the water in every 2 hours or so as when it gets Luke warm it doesn't serve much to cool them off. Caution with bringing them from the heat directly into AC. I like to have them cool off outside a bit before the shock of the cool AC. I keep the house between 70 and 80 as I do during the winter months as well. Also you can Hose your dogs down, there cool off spots are between their front legs and between their back legs (thighs) and (armpits) With a hose continuous flow of water or the pool will cool the blood that goes to the heart and it circulates causing them to cool off a little faster than just lying down in the shade. If they are outside also watch so they don't drink excessive amounts of water this is where ice cubes like vomveiderheiss said come in handy. IF your dogs love to GOBBLE water up like it is going out of style puts some icecubes in a dish. Sometimes I just put a dish of water in a freezer let it freeze and then the dogs can lick at it, and you don't have to worry about bloat. COOL damp rags, and if it is HORRIBLY hot and you do have AC let them outside to do their Business in the SHADE. This way they stay cooler and try to get them to do their business as quickly as possible, it just isn't healthy for dogs(or humans really) to go from Extreme heat to 20-30 degrees difference in such a short time. Make sure where you keep them has circulated air, dogs breath out 100% humidity and unless they intake air that is at least 80 degrees or cooler they can over heat believe it or not. So 100 Degree days aren't the only worries! If all else fails and your dogs don't want to eat, don't force them. They will not die if they miss a meal or even 2. I know in extreme heat I don't even want to eat myself, and I have had dogs that would act like they are dieing if they were fed 30 minutes later than normal not want to eat in heat. Believe it or not your dogs will do what is natural, they want to be cool! I've been known to place blankets over the AC unites in a few rooms and they'll lay on top of it as it is nice and cool, but not directly blowing on them :-) GOOD LUCK, and as long as your dogs drink water, if they miss a few meals or only eat 1 time a day for a few days when it is HOT don't sweat it. Offer them meals Later at night and early in Morning. I've had dogs want to eat at 3 AM and not eat again all day or all night, but as long as they drink they are good :-) Hope I helped! I was in MN for over 18 years I know exactly how the weather gets! Extreme HEAT and Extreme COLD! Keep us Posted. Regards, Vereinigte
