tcall36917, according to SV German Shepherd Breed Standard (FCI Rules) June 1997 Revisions Translated by Fred Lanting, SV Conformation Judge Reprinted from Schutzhund USA Langstockhaar (topcoat long, straight, soft, not lying tightly; with undercoat present; flags (feathering) on ears and legs, bushy trousers, bushy tail with formation of flags on the underside); l) Langhaar (topcoat long, soft; without undercoat, generally parting in the middle of the back; flags at ears, legs, and tail) They are not able to show, as you can see but they aren't illegal as far as breeding. People In germany breed longcoats all the time. go to http://www.haus-barrett.de/ for an example. As far as telling one when they are born... I dont think you can. They all look alike... little rats LOL. I believe to tell them from apart as puppies are probably around 7 weeks and up? if one looks really hairy then it's a long coat.

Sometimes in young pups 3-5 weeks long coats will have waivy hair and the stock coats won't.
