Hi Guys, so our german shepherd gave birth on friday the18th instead of the 23rd, 11 puppies, 8 made it, 4 girls, 4 boys.
Rushed mom to the emergency vet today, she is very tired and dehydrated, a little anemic! they gave her fluid under the skin, said to give her plenty of fluids and maybe help with the feeding of the pups.
my question is how do I get her fluids, strength up???
According to the kennel she was on royal canin while pregnant,(skin and bone) so we switched her to Instinct raw boost kibble (36 protein,20Fat, 2calcium) We also add pumpkin, and canned food(taste of the wild) or cooked chicken with her kibble.

The puppy replacement it good enough for the pups? I see some people add eggs and things...Please advise.
The vets ( called 6 different ones)seem to know absolutely nothing;( they have zero experience with this.
Please help with advise, thank you in advance!

Puppy milk in cans will do for a couple of days. Best to up the females food and liquids.

Make homemade chicken soup broth.  Cook whole chicken  de bone it and serve with the liquid she should improve in 2 days.  Free feed her dog food as well.

You should rotate the pups to nurse keep track do 4 pups at a time let the others sleep when that group is finished put the other 4 up to the table. This is better than any bought stuff.

This will also stimulate the female to keep making milk.

If the pups are not hungry because you fed them she will dry up.

I give my girls beef kidneys after they whelp all they want never a problem but they are used to raw food.  They are fed those plus regular food for about 3 days.

i always give the mothers goat milk mixed with some royal canin puppy moose canned. once the pups are suckling well i will give them fingerfuls of the moose. i also give the female cooked chicken , beef and liver but liver can only be 5% of the food.if you use the chicken broth it is salty so it will increase her water volumn. we had 12 pups 2 very week but they all made it we rotated them just as the previous post said. also give the pups pet-tinic or vit a,d,c, drops (triple vitamin formula) it stimulates their appetite.and i would get the pet bottles and use warmed buttermilk or goats milk

A bit of a suggestion: Mark each pup with something...Different Colored yarn or something to identify each pup...Also have a digital scale and weigh each pup once or twice a day...Chart them so you know which ones gain weight and which ones lose...
While mama is nursing is the ONLY time I ever Free-Feed my dogs...I leave Kibble out 24 hrs a day...and give her other foods 5 times a day...I am a great believer in feeding RAW Meats with bones...

I make what I call "mama dogs cocktail" I use beef or chicken broth ( unsalted) and dilute with water equal parts broth/water then add egg yolk only; no white unless you cook egg whites first, then ok to feed whole egg; however not raw egg whites; you can add a bit of plain yogurt or goats milk, give her a cup at room temperature at a time about 4 times per day will bring in her milk better and also help to give the pups a little extra nutrition thru her milk. With a litter that large I would bottle feed until mama starts getting more milk, but do let the pups nurse as that also helps to bring in her milk; also for her plenty of fresh water at all times. Also to help her with calcium someone on this forum mentioned using vanilla icecream in small amounts for mama dog.

Good luck...Plenty of food for her also. She obviously needs all the help she can get. Nan

Hi everyone,
Thank you so much for all the info. Mom is doing better today, she ate real good, did not want to eat yesterday. The pups are looking nice and chunky, we set the alarm clock for every 3 hours, to make sure everyone gets a turn...last night was a bit ruff but we are doing good. Trying to get mom to eat in between feeding the babies seem to work. She is drinking a lot more water today, gave her chicken broth this morning and she loved it!
What do you guys wean the babies on and at what age? I see some say 3 weeks other 4 weeks. All the buyers want the pups to be on kibble, so we are thinking of doing FROMM.
Thank you again you guys are great!

Many females do not eat for two to three days after giving birth, especially if they were able to eat the after birth.

My females will regurgitate food for the pups very early on, about 2 weeks.  I offer food and water as soon as they can get to it. Shallow pans, of course, and food is finely ground.

I feed all raw.
