Uncooperative female breeding. I am trying to breed a 3 year maiden bitch who is not co-operating. I have had her since day 8 and it is now day 14. she sometimes flags but never allows penetration. The males are very eager so I feel she is ready. Any hints to aid in this copulation. frustated PETER ! Peter Cadman peter_cadman@hotmail.com www.germanshepherddog.tv

Estrus can be at very different times for different bitches. We have had breedings as early as day 6 and as late as day 27. It may just not be the right time yet. If the males you have are not very experienced they will be eager at any stage of her heat cycle and really gives you no clue about the females ovulation. Only an experienced male has learned to pick the right time. Do ovulation testing (vet) to get an idea where she is at. That might help. Also, some bitches just are uncooperative the whole time and if you want the breeding you may need to restrain her, be a bit more hands on in order to get a tie.

How about artificial insemination?

If she is actually in estrus and being uncooperative you may want to step in just to make sure she doesn't get fed up and harm your stud. Large dogs are near impossible to break up during a fight, especially dogs with a bite like a shepherd. If you don't know how then you should ask your vet. Any vet worth his salt knows how to get a bitch bred and should be able to help you.

exactly - DH - a lot of breedings don't get done because the people are too anxious and trying to breed too early - There are lots of tests available now - simple one to check a slide for cornification of the cells ? I think that's the correct term, I have a drawing of it that's over 20 years old !! Males usually don't have a lot of empathy for a female that's not sure what's going on -- it's not like they're bringing flowers - so you have to have the male under control - as well as the female and she may need additional help in the way of a mild sedatative as well - or if natural doesn't work - AI is always an option- but do it with a reproductive specialist - not the breeder in the next town who's done it a couple of times. Your bitch may not be ready until several days AFTER her discharge turns pink . Do some tests !! Hope it works out for you.

You 1) need to be running progestrone to see where she is into ovulation 2) if she is a maiden female you may want your vet to exam her to varify she does not have a vaginal stricture. Seems we are seeing more of these between 2 other friends and myself I have seen 7 of them in the last 18 months and have heard of other breeders as well finding out when they go to do the breeding. Or she may have a angle to the her that can only be breed with asistance. Good luck.

my little bitch wasn't ready until the 18th day last year. I thought the stud had a low libido or ??? But we were going to AI her. We let them out to do their business in the yard prior to putting them in the van to head to the vet, and they got right down to it and tied right there. The stud was evidently more patient than I :)

Provided you did the testing to know she is ready, and had her checked for a stricture, Then you simply just have to hold her still. Once she has done it once, she will get the idea nad usually be easier the next time. My last bitch I bred was also maiden, and very squirrely. To hold them, to avoid the male being hurt, tier her tightly to something, like a post or pole so her head can't move or spin around, muzzle her. get a stool or a bucket and sit by her lower abdomen, one knee under her for support. Slide you arms underneath her to hold her thighs in place, with one hand holding her tail. All firmly so she can't move. It isn't easy. I would also highly suggest an experienced male who will ignore her cries. Sounds terrible doesn't it? But you don't want the male getting his "thing" injured, or for him to lose an ear piece if she snaps. Once they are tied, you can usually remove the muzzle. Keep holding her during the tie, I usually then wrap both my arms around them to keep them together in case she does a quick move, and make sure you are steady, they both can be very heavy during the tie with all that weight on your knee. Let them play for a bit before you attempt to breed, it usally helps to get them both excited about the idea.

One thing to keep in mind if you choose AI. I have known a few breeders (various breeds) that have used it on a maiden bitch and had problems during delivery due to the membrane not being broken by penetration. I'm not saying not to do it but if you choose to you may want the vet present at the delivery or at least on call and speed dial.
