Not long ago I read an ad for someone asking for a treadmill. They said they used the treadmill for conditoning their showdogs. My question is, how is the treadmill used for conditioning, and how on earth do you get a dog to run on one of those machines. How do you get them used to staying on it. I have heard of medical facilities that use them for therapy on injured animals, but not just for conditioning. I know that sometimes just plain running is not possible, during bad weather, etc. so in that respect excerising on the treadmill seems logical. I have often heard on this site that the only dumb question is the one not asked, so I will go ahead and ask it. Thanks in advance, Debbie

Hey Deb, They do not have much choice in the matter.Put them on it,turn it on, slow at first and slowly build up speed. The kind built for dogs are made according to the size dog, their gait and also have side panels to keep him in line and from attempting to jump off the side of the machine. Somebody posted some nice ones a while back for under $2000

Charlie answered your question perfectly. there are treadmills special made for dogs. they are of great benefit if you live in an area where weather is an issue or you have multiple dogs to exercise

This was the website. They are not an automated treadmills though and I am not sure but as I understand it, an automated one is prefered. I don't have the answer why. I just assume that the dog on a manual treadmill will reach more into the shoulder than offer free movement. http://www.pitbulllovers.com/training-articles/training-your-pit-bull-for-treadmill-work.html Maybe someone else can advise. . . the pros and cons. First off, Remember you want a mill that is very easy to spin. The Carpet Mill will give your dog a harder and more Anaerobic work out than the slats. You can get a carpet mill for under $500 including shipping. Chandler makes a fantastic mill and will customize it around your dog. http://www.grandcarpetmill.com/product.htm http://www.chandlermills.com/ http://home.att.net/~deadgame/wsb/html/view.cgi-home.html-.html http://www.angelfire.com/az3/winmill/ http://www.grandchampionajax.com/Treadmills.html http://www.colbypitbull.com/index.htm

Hi Debbie, The treadmills are great! I am going to look at the sites that others posted, but in my experience as well as friends in Europe, the dogs love it! I had two dogs running free fighting each other to get on! An important note about conditioning show dogs is that your treadmill is of sufficient length. They need to reach out! A normal human treadmill is not long enough. Start with short time frames and work up. I helped a friend in Mexico buy 2 Jod-A-Dog treadmills & he loves them. Good question

I use the same treadmill that I use for myself. I place my dog in a simple nylon harness that I purchased from Petsmart and anchor the other end of a strong leather leash to the control panel of the treadmill. You know, the place where I get to change the speed, inclination etc. I adjust the length of the leash by wrapping it around the control panel. Then start it slow. Initially I stood beside my dog on the runners to reassure and steady him. Now I don't. But I still remain beside the treadmill during the entire workout. I keep the speed at a trot level and increase or decrease inclination to vary the level of difficulty. I do not have front or side panels, but my dog doesn't need them now.
