So is it bad to learn dog training from the michael ellis videos and from internet forums?

That was a clear answer and what I was really looking for. I think I'm going with IPO because it's a better fit for my dog. I want to put my dog in the position to be successful and I think IPO has more upside potential for that. Forty minute drives, each way, twice or three times a week... not so bad. I think it's worth it. I'm excited.
