Yes I agree whole heartedly Looks take a backseat to the dogs working abality and god knows i,ve seen some UGLY working dogs that are working monsters and i have seen some that are beautiful and work just as hard I guess i was thinking that you were insinuating that by wantting a good looking dog you would lose the workabality.

My young male is of DDR blood slow maturing for sure but thick bone nice male head and strong and dark pigmnet in color he is 14 months and just starting to want to play with the ball and strting to show good responses with the helper. Now my 11 month old female from her in the states is and has shown extreme drives since I got her at 10 weeks and you should see her bark and hold on the helper, impressive, sorry for tooting my own horn...

Since a lot of other folks are posting pics of their DDR line dogs and DDR line crosses, here is mine:

She is now 8 months old.  These are current pics. (Her sire is DDR, her dam is 1/2 DDR and 1/2 Czech.)

spernagsds, Very nice pups :-)  The 3 of mine that I posted earlier are also out of Puck v Grafental.

djon, I do care on where my pups go obviously I still have 3 out of my litter, and I have not had a litter for over 2 years now. I did have them advertised awhile back but have not found that perfect home for them yet, so here they will remain until I can find someone suitable for them.  I do agree that a lot of the DDR dog's are not worked for various reasons, but that also goes for ALL working lines of the GSD's. Yes some people do buy on looks, to each their own right? Every dog is different as the same for every person, so therefore if someone wants to buy on looks, or working ability that is their prerogative.

K-9mom put it very well what was said earlier.

Uglydog, I am very partial to the old line's of the DDR. Rex v Haus Iris, Don v Rolandsteich, Lord, Golf v Ritterberg, Ingo  v Rudingen,  etc.

My girls is part east lines, I'm still trying to learn about her pedigree and understand "where she comes from."  Don't mind her coat, she's in season, it looks a bit ragged.  I have been told that she is "too refined" looking, which was an interesting comment.

Perhaps there is much less difference than people imagine.  Aren't there really good dogs in all major lines?

I agree that giving appearances a very high priority is inappropriate in a working dog and must lead to dilution of working ability (or narrowing of genetic pool and health).  But if one continues to select and breed for real work (and not imagined traits, as so many do) then there is no harm, I think, in caring for a coat, or color, or head type, is there?

This forum did indeed show that most DDR dog lovers like the look, but unless they are breeding for big heads instead of work, they shouldn't be condemned, in my opinion.

This has been a fun and educational read. I wish more posts on this board were like this thread. Terri

GSDXephyr, Your female is nice. The only DDR in her pedigree that I recognize is obviously Lord, Illa v Ritterberg, and Baruther Land. I would LOVE to have a Baruther Land in my girls 3rd generation. I did not check her pedigree out any further than what was shown.

MVF, There are very good dog's in all lines, it just depends on who your talking to and about what lines. If you talk about west working which I am not very familiar with then I would say Troll is a very good dog to have as well as Teikerhook {sp} lines, etc. If it's west show lines, I honestly can't answer that one. It can go on and on, but yes there are very good dog's in all different lines of the German Shepherd. I myself just happen to love the OLD DDR lines, and I am liking some of the west working as well.

I too have owned a Working lines. Got him from a back yard breeder. Immense prey drive, defense drive was off the charts and acted like a puppy till the day he died! His name was Razor. The picture was taken at his 14th birthday. He died last month. Aaah ill miss you Razor!

aristianM, I am so very sorry for your loss :-(  14 years old is a good age, and obviously he had a good life you with. With your Razor it just goes to show you can get drivey dog's from non-titled ones.
