I feed Purina ONE and ProPlan--when I can get to the store that sells ProPlan..........anyway I have been feeding ONE a long time and I like it and the dogs look great on it. I agree some of the Purina food is junk--like the dog chow, hi pro etc. But as I said my dogs do good on it so I don't plan to switch.....................

Everyone seems to think Sams or Wal-Mart makes Ol Roy and Maxximum Premium dog foods, just to clear things up I'm adding the followig info.
The former Doane Products Company began manufacturing feed for livestock in 1954. Four years later, Doane made its first pet food product - a private label meal-based dog food for its feed customers.
In 1969 Doane expanded its service to include private label customers in the grocery trade. The following year, mixed category vendors such as Wal*Mart enlisted Doane to make its store brand dog food. This partnership is one of the most enduring and successful vendor relationships in the industry and has grown to be one of the largest brands in the world. Doane eventually expanded into specialty pet products such as biscuits and a variety of treats.
In 1998 Missouri-based Doane Products Company engineered a strategic merger with Brentwood, Tennessee-based Windy Hill Pet Food - an outgrowth of Martha White Foods and Deep Run Packing Company. The merger created Doane Pet Care (DPC) as the largest manufacturer of store brand pet care products.
Since it's merger, DPC has since purchased European based Arovit and Larkshall, expanding its global manufacturing arms to
Since these acquisitions, DPC works to streamline operations and further expand its global and domestic presence. Doane Pet Care has grown from the size of about 400 million in 1999 to just under 1 billion in annual sales today.
Today, DPC celebrates new product opportunities and manufacturing capacity to better support its clients and strongly grow the business. DPC has emerged as one of the industry's leaders in manufacturing technology, nutrition, and supply chain management. And in 2006 it was bought by Mars Inc,which also makes Royal Canin.

I think "chicken" per AFFCO is a moist/fresh product. It doesn't take much protein from moist chicken to have "chicken" as the first ingredient. If the "chicken" is dehydrated, it may not make the 3rd or 4th or 5th ingredient.
Chicken meal and Chicken by-product meal are more substantial sources of protein, if it is not overcooked. Chicken can be overcooked as well, so the reputation of the maker is more important than chicken vs chicken by-product meal.
The adversion against "by-product" is irrational. Yes, I think a portion of human diet from chicken-by-product meal is GOOD for human consumption, if you are a young person in a developing country.

I just can't believe a lot of people on this forum they spend countless hours with their German Shepherds spend countless dollars on them and feed them crap. Did you ever hear the old axiom you are what you eat.
Listen to the Yellowrose she calls a spade a spade some don't like it but she is right on.
Here we go again dogs are carnivors they eat and do best on a raw meat based diet. That is what their digestive system is set up to handle not grains I'll repeat not grains. That is just crap filler that all these big conglomertae companies that are in the dog food business put into their food to make the food as cheap as possible to enhance their bottom line profits. Meat is expensive to put into a kibble. If you are going to feed a kibble look at the first few ingrediants see if their is any meat in there if it' starts with grains corn barley rice ask yourself how much better will my GSD be doing on a meat based diet.
I feed my German Shepherds 50% Orijen and 50% raw meat it sure isn't cheap but I sleep well at night knowing I do the best I can for my dogs when it comes to their diet.
A whole lot of you must have nightmares feeding the crap that you do to your dogs and then coming on this forum trying to rationlize this crap you feed your dog's.

If you always get what you paid for then sellers can charge the most bucks they can, just feed on the axiom.
Ratioinality and knowledge matter, and should rule.
The bias is against the term "by-product". Silly.
Pet food grade "chicken-by-product meal" does not even have higher "ash" (read excessive calcium) content than "chicken meal".
If "chicken" were the only major protein source and the crude protein content is high, then much of the protein must come from the "chicken".
