I have fed raw for almost 10 years. I have weaned 3 litters (mostly chicken since it is the easiest to grind) and raised countless puppies on raw. Chicken is one of the main RMB that I use along with turkey, pork, beef and occasionally rabbit, lamb and venison. I just cut it up into appropriate sized pieces.

A good Vet will know that raw chicken, or fraw meat for that matter is ok, and healthy. some Vets just simply do not know, are worried about a complete diet for the dog or want to sell the Vet brands. Not a new problem, sad that it is still like that. Loved the comment about the "how do you feed the chicken" You are so right "Kerschberger" the more fun to catch the food the better.. I feed the chicken as i get it, sometimes whole and cut it up in dayly ration sizes, and sometimes, drumsticks or something else is cheap or on sale... wichever is available. Same with turkey and turkey necks. Often after Thanksgiving you get turkey veeery cheap, so Then i go buy, and granted froszen it is a little harder to chop up, but half defrosted (not totally) it works ok, and get s portioned and back into the freezer. Also chickenliver and gizzards, depending on where you live make nice supplements, too. I give the chicken with intact bones, too. since my "inhalers" take some time to chew then, but even with bones in it they are fast....

You wouldn't eat Raw Chicken...would you?"...

i'm curious, does your vet lift his leg or "squats" when he takes his "bio-breaks"?

Idadenton gets my vote for the funniest post reply of the Year..2008>

Love it  and I hope the poster goes back to the vet that told him that and says just that to him....I will save that for my folder of good info learned from the german shepherd database...KUDOS  IDA

You'll never get 2 vet to agree on much of anything. But raw chicken is great for the dogs. As for The DEATH BONE. It doesn't have to be removed. Until you DRY it, it is the same as all the other bones and can be eaten and digested.

I started feeding raw food to my two adult shepherds (5 yo and 2 yo) in 1998-1999.  There was no transition and they did quite well eating backs, necks, wings, legs, breast meat and bone. I cut up whole chickens into major sections and buy what is on sale.  I will buy extra and put it in the freezer to keep the cost down.

I have one 14 month old shepherd now and he started eating chicken drumsticks at 11 weeks old.  Before that I was running the meat through a grinder.

It took him a little while to figure out how to get started, but not too long.  He was begging for more but I didn't want to push my luck.  I didn't start out with necks because I didn't want him to just swallow it like a snake.  I wanted him to have to chew and crush.

He also had to learn about keeping his raw chicke on the placemat in the kitchen.

Yes, I feed completely raw food. HOWEVER, NOT weight bearing joints, i.e. thighs and legs etc. (There is a possibility that a thicker stronger joint like this could damage the dog's teeth). So avoid the weight bearing parts. Regards, Vixen

My dogs LOVE raw chicken, I've also ordered some raw turkey necks,

Some lady that breeds gsd's told me a long time ago, to feed raw chicken to my females that were about to have pups, that
it helped with the milk production, so far I haven't had to supplement any pups, even with litters of 13, the mom always has
enough milk to go around,

and as far as your vet is concerned, I wouldn't eat poopsicles, BUT on ocassion, my dogs sneak one as a treat:

This is Mira enjoying a Purdue broiler chicken, she was about to have pups soon, it was her last litter, she was
luv'n it!

Mira ate some of the chicken then took time out for a "HAPPY ROLL"!

I feed raw chicken necks and backs as an occasional addition to their other food.  Also livers, gizzards, and whatever else I can find on sale.  All the dogs loves the raw, I just need to find some good sources I trust so I can expand.

I guess my vet is unusual.  He is fine with the idea of raw for the dogs.  Even to the point he told me the very best diet would be one whole rabbit a day, hide and all.  Made me think I should restart my rabbitry.......
