PSA it is a total different beast. I do think it is one of the beset ways to test your dog in the USA at this point of a time.

Daryl,

I would think it would be prudent to ask Dean himself and not rely on hearsay.  Dean will be honest and upfront with you.

Really Vicky, I don't give a hoot about Dean, hearsay or not.  If you do it, no doubt he does too.  Right or wrong, I could care less, because it has nothing to do with breeding.  Trialing does not in my opinion reflect on a dog what you will find in the process of training it.  I simply wondered who was correct, John or Shelly about disqualification for doing such?

it would be possible to fail a trial for handler help.  granted it would have to be a major point loss, and the only way i could see that is if you had to constantly talk to the dog to keep them with you.  also if you were to grab your dog by the collar to pull them into position, you could fail.   touching the dog outside of to praise them at the end of an exercise is not allowed.

i have seen one person fail a bh for talking to their dog to much,  didnt help because the dog still did not pay attention.  2nd person also talked to their dog a lot.  they passed because when given the extra commands the dog responded to them.    that is how the judge explained it to us.

Daryl,

Really Vicky, I don't give a hoot about Dean, hearsay or not.  If you do it, no doubt he does too.

Why would Dean do that?  All I did was say for you to call him and find out straight from him......no need to be hostile, I wasn't being!!

Right or wrong, I could care less, because it has nothing to do with breeding.

This whole thread has NOTHING to do with breeding!  Whew, that came out of left field!  And breeding maybe your goal but it isn't mine, competition is my goal!

Trialing does not in my opinion reflect on a dog what you will find in the process of training it.

Don't you have to TRAIN a dog to be able to trial it?  So, have you trained with your stud dog?  What do you know from dirrectly training him?

I simply wondered who was correct, John or Shelly about disqualification for doing such?

If you were simply wondering then why the hostility? I guess it all depends on how much handler help you give or what type it might be....I don't know, I have not seen anyone be DQed for handler help.  Actually, at our club trial just yesterday, the judge (Carol Patterson, DVG America President) talked about this subject at the trial and she said handler help can be smart and you need to know how to read your dog to know if he is going to need it or not....you might loose a few points for the handler help but it is better to loose those few than to loose all the points for the exercise!  But, bottom line is that you have to be able to read your dog!

There have been a few times the judge has asked me why didn't you "Help" you dog?  And gave me tips on how I could have done that and it gone undetected.  For example, my dog once stood at an article on the track and waited.  I waited for him to down on the article and he went on.....the judge said I could have maybe pulled on the track line (since it was already tight) a line a little or whispered platz to see if the dog would down, it would have been better to loose a point for the handler help than to walk the article.  Also, some dogs get trial wise and know they can choose not to be correct so they too need handler helps so they don't become too trial wise!  Even a judge that trials uses handler helps!

vickie the shame of getting caught is not worth the extra points.its cheating the dog should now the drill. once trained it should be a walk in the park .it's not like stealing a base in baseball.there's a difference and yes it goes on all the time but if the judge catches you to many times it will not be worth the tell
