Many years ago a local paper took a picture of me competing jumping with one of my horses. I didn't know it for a few months until I saw it used for an ad for an upcoming event. I contacted the newspaper and told them who I was and would they please send me an 8 X 10 copy? They did. I was thrilled that not only did the picture turn out so good ( I didn't have that many of me jumping), the newspaper used it, and I got a free very nice copy!

What happens if the photo is taken by the photographer at a trial ,he has taken them to sell and some one hyjacks them off his site with out paying ? Does the photographer own the photos ? How will he make any money if someone lifts them for free . Can the photographer sue the person who took the photos from his site with out permission ? It would seem an injustice to the photographer who put in his time only to have his work stolen .

The photographer owns the photos, the other person is stealing plain and simple. It happens to us all the time. That's why so many of us can only use very small proofs covered in water marks.
Generally, I give away my photos for FREE, but I ask that the person contact me first and either keep a small watermark with my name in the corner, or credit me below the photo. I like to know where my pics are going but otherwise I don't always require money for them. Now if someone just takes them and uses them I get really pissed and probably wouldn't let them have my photos any more.
Sometimes I can't give my photos away even if I want to because I am photographing under someone else and being commissioned by the WDA or whatever, so the WDA also owns my photos and has first right to use them in their publications before I can give or sell them anywhere else.
The bottom line is I love dogs and I love photography. I would be taking photos at every show whether I am asked to do it in the ring or not. So, I have no problem giving a proud owner the photo of their dog if they just ask.

photographs are not public domain, even when posted on the internet, even when not signed by the photographer. The photographer is the owner of the photo no matter where in public it is posted or shown, and automatically copyrighted the moment the photographer pushes the button to take the picture. Yes the photographer can take you to court to force you to remove pictures that don't belong to you, if you steal them off the internet even from a public site. They are OWNED and cpyrighted by the photographer, cannot be taken legally without direct permission from the photographer.

A. Molly is correct.
B. GS lover and Kitkat: I thought you guys had been doing so well in keeping the nonsense off this site. I see, though, that it has begun yet again. <sigh> Please stop!

GSLover whether the Internet is a "public domain" has no bearing on how photographs are licensed. The photographer determines how the images are license, not The Internet. Photography and licensing laws have existing before the Internet was accessible in every household.

kitkat, every time you post you curse and act the victim - your posts never have anything to do with the topic of the thread and have everything to do with your own personal life and problems - please keep it off this site. It's really gotten (past tense) old. I have reported your posts as well as your loser ex's posts.
