Anyway nope, wasn't me at the eastern pow-wow circuit.

Moons,
Carl said he started going to Pow-wows back in the 60's, basically when they started having them. And he traveled throughout Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, & even as far south as Virginia. He was originally from Florida, he is a Seminole, & since he is no longer attending the Pow-wows, he's just trying to find some of his old buddies from back in the day.....LOL! Lot of good times spent around the fire circle, sometimes all night....those of us who would retire to our sleeping bags could here the men talking & laughing, & the drums all night, fire crackling, stars above...the sweet smell of burning sage, other burning things, too. It would get quiet as the sun was starting to come up through the morning mists, then some one would play the wood flute softly, to welcome the sun, as all the smiling faces where still hidden away in the tents. Good, strong times.
Ah, well, maybe it was somewhere else. They would go every weekend during the spring, summer, & into the fall for as long as it was warm enough to camp out without freezing, a different place each weekend. Sharing the stories of the people with the dominant culture where ever we were welcome. Carl ran the Seminole Cafe; bison burgers, fry bread, old fashioned perc'd coffee & homemade lemonade, & whatever other goodies we women would cook up for everyone. Carl would join the dancers in full regalia.
His cousin Quentin Bear Fuller, a Philadelphia firefighter, was responcible for bringing the Pow-wows into many communities, he even took one of the drums & dance corps to Germany for a summer of Pow-wows there.
So, Carl was just wondering. I was reading some of your posts to him, & he was asking, "This Two Moons, what does he look like? His way of thinking seems familiar to me. I must have known him from a Pow-wow somewhere." And so I asked you.
How are your puppies, BTW, have you posted pictures? This back & forth between boards takes a little more time than I have to spare, some days, so I fall behind....sorry if I missed it. I bet they're adorable! Have you picked out a little girl to hold back, yet? Regards, jackie harris

I would love to meet Carl, but I doubt we met in the past. I did spend time in Ft. Lauderdale and Homestead back in the early seventies, those were some interesting times..... :)
I have no native blood as far as I know, but my fathers side of the family gets lost a few generations back, ya never know.
I remember a family friend who visited us when I was a boy, a man named John Mankiller, he and his sons came to hunt with their bows. I can't remember much from that time except they where the first native americans I had ever seen.
We did have Pow-Wow here several years back and everyone was disappointed that it turned into something else.
More like a flea market for the white man and poorly organized. I wish it could have been real.
Perhaps I sound familiar to Carl because of the nature of our beliefs. We may have much in common.
As for puppies, I hope to get around to taking some pictures soon. Weather has been bad and I've been busy with other things. Today maybe, if things work out.
I won't make a choice until the last minute, at eight weeks I will know.
Moons.

He has family down in Ft. Lauderdale, but hasn't been down there in a very long time, like early '50's.......!
He said that there are several families with the surname Mankiller, he knows a couple men with that surname, but wouldn't know if it was the same guy.
The Pow-wows can become like swap meets if they are poorly organized, too bad the one you experienced was like that. The cool stuff happens at night, if you stay & hang around the fire with the guys after everyone else goes home. And then, of course, there's the after hours sport of teepee creeping, each person visiting the next fellows tent, swapping stories, grub, & refreshments, tall tales required at each stop! By the time you're done, you may well need to creep! And the Pow-wows that are held on the reservations are done for the people themselves, there's not that feeling that you have to 'sell' stuff to everyone, although there's certainly a lot you can spend money on, if you want to....'course there are no reservations here in Pennsylvania, the red man is not recognised by the state government as a human. White, oriental, & black are the only races recognised by the state of Pennsylvania. That harkens back to the days of the Indian Schools, of which there were several in Pa. Places where the children were sent after they were forcibly taken from their parents, declared 'orphans', & taught to forget their culture, their language, their families, & had their hair cut off, & made to accept the dominant culture. This continued in one form or another until very recently, one of the schools is still open, & many native persons harbor deep resentments about this more than any other thing done to them as a culture. Which is why Pennsylvania is an important place to be Native American, & be so proudly.
So, anyway, where do you live? If Quentin has any drums performing near you, I will let you know, they are pretty breath-taking! And make sure you tell him that you are a friend of Carlton Harris', Carl is Quentin's older cousin, & they'll treat you right. jackie harris

DONT WANT TO CREEP IN ANY GUYS TEEPEE AND I SURE DONT WANT NO DUDE CREEPING INTO MINE. OF COURSE ALL GALS CAN CREEP THEIR WAY INTO MY TEEPEE ANYTIME................................RR
