2 things for folks starting in backpacking with dogs
#1 pack evenly so that the weight is same or nearly on each side...
#2 Don't let your dog carry your lunch... it can ruin a backpack and leave ya REAL hungry

What brand are those backpacks? Where did you purchase them. They look nice and good quality. How are they holding up under use?

How did you get your dogs to walk with them on? Buddy has swimming therapy once a week and flatly refuses to move with the lifebelt on... it's hilarious, he acts like he's got no legs! I'm certain he's never walk with a pack on, though Josh probably would. They could carry a nice bottle of wine and some sarnies!

The backpacks are "Ruffwear Palisades Pack II" I ordered them from Backcountry.com (the lowest price I found)
www.backcountryoutlet.com/outlet/RUF0003/Ruffwear-Palisades-Pack-II.html
Ruffwear has updated the pack's design, but the original "Palisades Pack II" (yes, the pack II is the original), recieves much better reviews on the web when the two are compared. Apparently the updated version has lost some of the features on the original (i.e. the soft sleeve coverings for the harness straps)
As for long-term durability. I haven't had them long enough to speak to that personally. I can say that they are very well made and make all the other packs I've seen in petstores look like toys. We're just thrilled with them and all their design features. I read dozens of reviews from different websites before I bought them and everyone stated that it was the most durable, well-made pack that they had ever owned. Some people stated that they had owned and used theirs extensively for years and they still looked brand new.
As for getting the dogs to wear them. It was no sweat. Now that they're fitted to each dog (took about 10 minutes each), it takes about 5-10 seconds to put on the harness and 5 seconds to attached the pack. The dogs just accepted them with zero fuss. There is no struggle, no fighting them & no attempts to get out or bite at the foreign object. When I pulled them out yesterday, both dogs jumped up and ran over to have them put on. Both dogs seem very comfortable wearing them and, like Mum of Zoe said, they have features to make them comfortable for the dog.
I also noticed that when the dogs are wearing them, they do not change their normal mobility patterns; the GSD stills bounces, bounds, tries to get the golden to play & runs through mud puddles like god is telling him to. The Golden, with his lumbering gait, will be the one packing the beer
As for sizing, the GSD and the Golden are 86 and 83 pounds respectively and they're both wearing the large pack. Although, given the sizing range, they could wear a medium too.
Goodness, I don't mean to sound like a sales pitch, but I'm just really impressed by the product

Thanks venzosomom. Don't you just love those rare moments when everyone is sitting still and looking in the right direction? I think I have 2 dozen other shots where the dogs look less than stellar
hahaha....I can't even imagine how many shots it'll take to capture the GSD in a proper stack.

Thanks for the link! I'm going to get one, too! My new prong collar arrived, with new leather police/schutzhund leash, (overkill for me, I know, but the kid is expressing interest in dog sports, so we'll see where it goes.) The beer carrying feature was a closer for me.

Any idea how much weight a healthy 3-year old 65 lb. GSD can pack?
