im not trying to compare one sport to the other.  im just venting how some people think that one is better than they other and so many leave  any form of tracking out.   psa plus criminal apprehention through tracking would be wonderful.

I agree John, a sport with a track that results in catching a decoy at the end would be very interesting.  PSA should look into this, sounds like a job for 4pack she can get it going.

i will admit that i have zero knowledge about psa,  any of the ring sports, or knpv.    from my understanding they have no form of tracking associated with the titles they offer.  why is that?    why do so many people knock schutzhund as not a real test of what a german shepherd is suppose to be, yet they very seldom, if ever, offer up a suggestion as to what is a "real" test?

I know a lot of people that do sports other than schutzhund. And the only ones that think that it’s not a test are the ones that have never done it. When ever some jackass starts telling me about how schutzhund is not a test of a dog I ask them about the tracking in their sport. I get instant silence.

last, but certainly not least,  what about those who say schutzhund is so easy they can get any dog from the pound and put a schutzhund title on it?  please do it. and of course i want to see some type of documentation to prove it.

I think that any dog with a halfway decent temperament and an ounce of drive can get a schutzhund title. But that is one of the things I love about the sport and that the reason it is the most popular protection sport in the world. Anyone can get a dog and play. But the sport get’s very hard and competitive at the higher levels. What other sport has hundreds of dogs from dozens countries coming together to compete in one trial?

dont get me wrong,   i have the upmost respect for those that train their dogs in any  field.  i just dont get how one sport is better than the other.

I think that most of the sports are good. They just test for different things and have different philosophies behind them.

4PACK,  you have a job now.   tell them psa folks to add tracking with catching the bad guy at the end.  dog gets to bite,  handler gets to feel good because their dog got the bad man.  sounds like fun to me!!!!   it would make me want to look into psa more and not whine so much.

make more of us civilians feel like we have real police dogs!

A real dog should be able to track more then a straight track and a corner. Sars dogs are a good example of a good tracking dog. Just ask a schz. person if there dog can track a missing kid and more then half will tell you NO . They are not trained for that ! Ask a SARS trained dog to track a straight line and a corner and it can.Ask it to find a missing person and it can.

Can a SAR dog ride a tricycle and walk a tight rope like a circus dog?

excellent post christoper,,,,, dogs can do whatever  they are trained for.  as long as they have something that motivates them, and their handler, to do it.     to me the best dog would be the one who can be trained to do whatever is asked of it.   the more venues the dog/handler can acomplish, the better.     i guess thats why i like schutzhund so much.  more areas to do the work.

John, I agree 100% with your original post and some of the responses simply prove your point. :-)

You need to move beyond schz if you want your dog to reach it's full potential. By all means start there but why stop there ?
