If you want to see an example of breeding whites to colors look to the back of magazines such as Dog Fancy.  There is an ad for wheeled carts for dogs suffering from spinal injury.  I can't remember the name of the company but the ad features a GSD with an incredible coloring.  Check it out.  It's very obvious.

Great question,

Back in the seventies I was breeding solid black GSD's, and a guy that got one was asked to breed

his solid black boy to a solid white girl and they had a litter of pale washed out black & tans, someone
that got a pup from that litter was disappointed cause his puppy grew up to be too friendly, not what he
expected in a GSD, it was probably confused!

The solid black gene & the solid white gene was not on both sides, so no solid anything...

Re; dAWgESOME post

I  think the puppies in that link look just like typical American Line Shepherds. I don't believe that panda shepherds are a direct result per se' of breeding a soliid black and a pure white shepherd. It would depend more on what the white dog really is.
I wouldn't want to even guess where a panda shepherd comes from. I don't care for them, couldn't give me one. If others likethem, thats all on them. I'm not anyone to critisize what color , or standard or shape shepherd anyone has!

How can a black, (and therefore carrying ONLY the black recessive) and a white dog (carrying dilutes) produce balck and tan.???   Someone will have to explain that to me, because, frankly, it makes no sense to me at all.  I suspect that a b & T went over the fence.

No, no not panda's - just the photo of the white sire &  black dam at the bottom of the page.... I spend too much time on the internet and found that breeding a few weeks ago, then saw this post and remembered the photo.  I love looking at ALL dogs and seeing "it" for my self.

Check out the movie clip the littlest hobo a direct result of a black and tan breeding with a white gsd. The breeder had some whites and blacks in the mix. Not a recommended breeding but this dog did well.

Well mystery im no expert on genetics but I have seen pups from two solid blacks produce black and tans and black and reds.So if on the black, the black and red/tan gene were present I would suppose it could also manifest it self in a  solid black and white breeding resulting in a black and tan or black and red pup or two in a litter.
