Here is a great link with picture and info on demodex, unfortunately we have had two dogs with this problem, one was our rescued Am Staff who came to us at 6 weeks with it the other was a littler of pups we were fostering some had it some didn't. The article recommends if you are considering breeding the dog NOT to treat the dog if its the localized version. You need to make sure the dog can clear it on its own if not it should not be bred.  Our vets told us it was genetic and to neuter etc also gave me a gloom and doom about seeing dogs have to be euthanised its so bad etc. I really think if you catch it early and are proactive the dog should be fine.  We've seen horrible cases with different types of mange over the years they have all been treatable so far.

Bella had Demodex Mange at 6 months old. (Vet confirmed with scrape test.) She had scabs mostly on her hind quarters and also a fair amount of hair lossthat was most noticeable on her underside. She was treated with antibiotics and Iverectin for a month. Took a few weeks of treatment before the itching/scratching eased up a bit and hair loss stopped. Had her checked last month and she's clear. Keeping my fingers crossed it doesn't flare up again.

Did the pup have staf infections from the itching?  Its the only reason I would see the vet using anti-biotics.  I did use the dip on my pup years ago and had no problems, but only on the effected areas (nose).  If the areas are raw, the chemicals in the dip can agrivate them.  best to get an infection cleared up first.

As mentioned above, a skin scrapping should have been done to confirm the problem is normal mites gone amouck.

Thank you Yellow Rose for speaking up forthrightly.

We should all feel free to discuss this openly.

There is some indication that it may be contagious between unrelated dogs and humans.

After the threatening manner in which a question was asked  "Yellowrose, would you care to share what working lines in particular you feel carry or always seem to have a problem with this issue of Mange??"

I have reread YR's first post and she did not even remotely imply what I highlighted in yellow.  No one will come forward and speak honestly with that type of bullying and accusatory questioning.  (If you start attacking me for saying this it will prove my point.)

I predict that there will be many new findings on this troublesome subject.

Here is what happened to a woman working at a rescue center with a dog who had extensive demodex.

Pharaoh:

You are exactly right...Also, to shock the rest of the board another statement you can take to the bank:

Do you have any idea how many people  , humans reading this thread have worms , in their digestion tract?

Any breeder, young , old , no matter how clean you are or are not,,,can just be rest assured if you handle enough puppies in your lifetime , and grown dogs, kenneling, cleaning floors, kennel bottoms, washing pups, washing and grooming your dogs, from 2 weeks old to 20 yrs old, if anyone has one that old,,,you have come in contact with a worm egg or eggs on your hands and may have worms...You just dont know it....

SOME PEOPLE WILL NOT ADMIT IT NOR DO THEY EVEN WANT TO KNOW IT.....SORRY BUT IT IT A PROVEN FACT, JUST LIKE KIDS BRING LICE HOME FROM SCHOOL......HOW DO YOU THINK YOU GET  SORES FROM DEMODECTIC , OR MANGE OR FLEAS OR WORMS....

THEY ARE INGESTED BY MISTAKE..ERROR ON OUR PART..  ANSWER THE PHONE.,, TOUCH THE PLATE WE EAT OFF, EAT A SANDWICH, PUT IT DOWN IN THE KENNEL AREA...GO INSIDE TAKE THE PLATE, SANDWICH, CUP THAT WAS IN THE KENNEL....WORM EGG ON CUP, PLATE, YOUR GLOVES, YOUR HAND OR YOUR FEET...LITTLE  FEETS....YES, AND THEY GET DOWN THE HATCH...YOU NEVER KNOW....

SCRATCH  your face, your arms, your knee , your back , your anywhere???????your eyes, never believing you have transfered the germ right to you.....if you have a strong constitution, you may not have a reaction...but worms dont care if you have a constitution or a reunion....they just crawl right on in...and join in the fun.....in your body///   until you  find out you have a preditor inside of you..

Cross-contamination is unavoidable no matter how careful.

Profilactic measures are a very, very good idea.

Any health food store caries capsules of the old fashioned, time honored combination.

Worm wood and Black Walnut.Capsules or tinctures

"These herbs have been used historically to help rid the body of a wide range of worms, parasites and their eggs. Black Walnut is a wonderful natural alternative for promoting healthy regularity while nourishing the entire body. A fantastic source of soluble fiber, Black Walnut hulls are both safe and gentle. Additionally, this herb is used extensively as a vermifuge to expel internal parasites. Wormwood is perhaps best known because of the use of its oil to prepare certain alcoholic beverages, most notably vermouth and absinthe. Wormwood was used by traditional herbalists as a bitter to improve digestion, fight worm infestations........"

Thanks for that link Pharaoh! I knew sarcoptic was transferable to humans but I didn't know that demodex was too.

London,

It is not believed that it could be transmitted yet there are cases where it has happened and was verified by scraping the human.  Ughhhhh...... can you imagine....... It would have to be extremely rare I suppose.

There are also unexplained transfers between unrelated dogs.
