Is the stud just not hiting the mark?
If that's the case then you have to get down there and guide him in. Some non spermicital lube will help.

if the stray mutt dog was trying they would probably be locked instantly !!!!

They like to do it when your not watching, try relaxing about it your self a little and see if it happens then. Are there other dogs around?? that can sometimes unnerve the both male and female. Also try removing them from each other for an hour or two ,then let them try again. Some dogs do not want human help while the love thing starts.

no other dogs around but I may be stressing them a little I think I will have a glass of wine and see what gives I did let them be for half the day and he usually gets the female by then so I helped a little ( he is a great stud couldn't care less if you are there or not) he hits the spot goes to town but still no lock and she is standing great for him.. I just never had this happen before. I will consult the vet monday I guess and untill then chill out a bit. Is it possible for her to take with a breeding but no lock?

It is possible to have an outside tie and get pregnant.

"If I A I her will she be in danger for the delivery? I am worried if she is unable to breed naturally will she still be able to deliver puppies ok?"
Most likely, she will do fine, because the hormones will kick in and her vagina will go soft. Anyway that's my experience. But obviously you'd be wise to keep a close eye on her. I did have a problem with an especially BIG puppy having a hard time.

Depends on how strong his swimmers are! I have seen Rotties have this problem and still produce a "small" litter but he was inside a few times but never did lock.
Let us know what the vet says.
