This is definitely infected. Stoic working dog that he is, T shows no outward indication of discomfort, but it has to bother him and I worry about the infection going systemic.

Infection must be dealt with first, it can be fatal if it goes into the blood stream.
I couldn't have mine worked on without the ten days of antibiotics first for the same reasons.
Is there any discharge? Can you smell it, an infection will smell.
No mater you'll be getting it looked at right away.
I know the tooth ache , he'll be ok as soon as he see's the vet, ask for the good stuff !!
Poor thing.

My dog has the same problem to. Her face swelled up so big she looked part bull terrier..lmao. It will cost me $400 to remove the tooth or $2000 to $3000 to restore it at a dental vet as a root canal treatment.

Yes, a root canal vs. dental extraction will cost A LOT more. On a dog that's not working anymore, I'd certainly for for the extraction. They can eat fine without the tooth. There are plenty of dogs out there who are missing a lot more teeth than that and eat fine. :)
Depends on the vet and the area, but where we are would probably be in the $700 or so range. The dog's have pre operative bloodwork done and an IV catheter for the procedure. We usually use the drill for that 3 rooted tooth. Is it on the top or the bottom Shelley? And you are right that the premolar in front of it, is probably shot too.
Unfortunately dogs have to be sedated to have teeth pulled, where as a human can be done awake. Hence the cost difference. :)

My 18 month old bitch broke her upper canine a few days ago and is having a root canal treatment on Wednesday, by a Veterinary Dentist. I have been quoted £650 (UK) to include follow up X-rays in 6 months time.

Hawk need to have several front incisors pulled a couple of years ago. He broke them from repetitive years of smashing his face on the ground retrieving balls, and removing caps from stolen soda bottles. I knew he broke two, x ray revealed two more were broken below the gumline. As with anything, the anethesia was the main fee. Total cost was around $700. Now when you lift his lips, he looks like my redneck dog...not that there is anything wrong with rednecks. :) A month or so off from bitework, and he was good to go....

I will also add that the best dental vet around the northern part of the East Coast is somewhere on Long Island. Sorry I don't have a name, but when it comes to caps and all that fancy stuff, he is highly recommended. I know Jodi Potter and Pia Blackwell can tell you who he is.

It looks like I got the bargain doggie dental work. I had a dogs three teeth removed (abcesses) and also had the teeth cleaned. I think it was about $500. Veronica
