To answer your questions . I would have her checked by a vet before trying.  The male/stud depending on whom you ask  -any male worth anything  the breeder will ask for hips 99.9 % of the time and nowdays elbows too. If you are wanting to breed to a titled male then your female must have titles most of the time again depending on whom you ask.

Are you wanting to improve on the female or just have a litter? the questions that follow s that question is

Why are you wantung a litter in the first place? (be honest with your self)

What are you looking to get from a litter? (working drives, show dogs, pet)

Do you have people wanting your puppies?

Do you have the time to bottle feed if needed? care for the puppies? can you take off from work to care for them?

Do you have the extra money for a c-section if that was to happen? What if you lost your female on the table -would it be worth it? vet cost of puppies?

could you keep 1-8 puppies if no one bought your puppies? could you care and feed them?

And after you sat down planned every thing out - planning what time of the year the puppies would be born (summer very hot and most people do not buy in the summer time -vacations. Winter - potty breaking is a witch) where is the stud? do you ship your female or bring in sperm or locate a close stud? what about cost for stud fee. Next find a place in the house for whelping, do you buy or make a whelping box? Next what about your female? is she is shape, good health, have her checked for heartworms, parasites, diseases, Hip and Elbows and thyriod.

After you look at the cost, time, and details can you still see your self having a litter?

Anyone can have a litter of puppies but it takes money, time and care to do it right. Make sure you are doing it for the right reasons.

hope this helps

A dog in never too old to have its hips/elbows scored, and no I don't think 4 yrs old is too old to breed her after they're done.

I did an OFA on a 5 1/2 year old bitch once, many years ago.  She went OFA Fair.

Why do you need to breed her, There must be a reason other than making money out of the Dog,

But then if you are serious about Breeding why not do the Job right and get her Hips and elbows done, the right thing for the Female you have and the right thing for the Pups to be

Both my Dogs are scored A Normal I do not intend to breed them but just did it so i will not ruin them by working them  on theScHh field,

it is only fair to the Dogs that we get them scored regardless of what we want them for and for the owners peace of mind

It's a good pedigree and some of the missing info re: hip scores could easily be filled in.  Get her hips and elbows done and if possible, (I don't know where you are) get her surveyed.  Then think about why you want breed.

I can tell you, it's no picnic and you are not guaranteed to get good homes for the puppies... you may get some of them back when their new owners find that they can't cope; it will  cost you a small fortune (stud fee. Vet fees, whelping box, advertising etc) and if you do it all properly (and you should), you won't make a brass razzou!

What kind of Shepherd are you looking to breed with?   I have a AKC registered White German Shepherd that will be able to breed in August 2009.  It would be his first breeding.   Would you be interested?  You woul have to travel to us.

We have a listing on here.  Look under Stud Dog and it is AKC White German Shepherd Stud.

Our email is mapleleafshepherds08@yahoo.com

Thanks Crystal

Err..  Mapleleaf... I suspect you're joking as your dog is a 5 month old puppy, there's absolutely NO pedigree posted, the photo is of a very pretty faced white pup, but nobody can tell anything about his conformation... and at that age he certainly has not had any of the expected tests for hips, elbows etc done.... and has no record for either conformation shows or obedience/ schutzhund.  At the VERY least post his pedigree along with his picture.  From what's listed there nobody can even tell if he's registered!!   Aside from all the miriad of issues that are bound to be brought up, this person is asking if 4 is too old, and breeding to your dog would mean waiting another full  year... AND it's generally not the best idea to start out a maiden bitch with an inexperienced puppy male....

My understanding is that the radiologists reading the xrays for OFA are told how old the dog is.

4 years old is not a problem.

Part of the reason you want to have the health certifications is that you will attract a better buyer for your precious puppies.  I would be afraid of who would buy a puppy from non-certified parents.  Too scary and way too risky.

Good luck and keep on researching what is the right way to go.
