Wow there are like what 15,000 people in the U.s that do dogs sports......

If you win a big trial you will probably get big endorsements just like Micheal Jordan, Tony Stewart, or Eli Manning...

Be true to yourself do what you enjoy..

you dont get disqualified  using "tells".  it will cost you points, but not dq'ed.

trust me,  if more people did dog sport for money, there would be a hell of a lot more people doing it.

from what i have seen and talked to people, we do this sport as part of the breed evaluation process.   more than what most AKC breeders do.  running in circles in a ring can tell you the true make up of a dog?   maybe the sport cant tell you everything about a dog either, but it comes closer than standing and looking pretty for a living.

oh,  forgive me, the germans have been doing this wrong for a hundred years.  we know whats best for the GSD, not them.(please note the heavy sarcasim)

i'll get off my soap box.  just runs me the wrong way when someone thinks schutzhund is JUST a sport, and forgets about the AD, show ratings and korungs.  yea, yea, yea,,,,,,,,we do it for the money.

wuzzup your following Vickie from post to post is getting old.

Now as to the question...I train to teach my dog manners and an outlet for their energy. I love dogs that do what they are bred for. I trial when and if the dog is ever ready and for my own fun. I don't feel that I need to trial to "prove" my dogs worth because his worth will always be higher in my heart than dollar signs or any trophy can convey.

Also since I have worked for myself for 5 years, it's not often I get out and about or hold adult conversations with real people over the age of 5. Going to training is a nice way for me to catch up with the rest of the world or just get out of the house.

Sometimes it is better to loose a few points for handler help (if you get noticed doing it) than it is to loose ALL the points for not doing the exercise!  You will not be DQ'd for the little handler helps!

Handler help is just plain smart when it comes to points. If you know your dog needs the help, it's best to take a few less points, than to have your dog blow even more if left to his own devices. Handler help also comes in many different forms, wispers, handler position and body movement. I think we all use it to some extent or another. I use it heavily with pups and less and less as a dog gains experience.

I'm so nervous at trial I can't make myself help my dog and I kinda don't want to. True test of my trainng is if he passes with no help. I'm with dawgsome when it comes to the cheats and stuff. Some folks go a little too far in covering their dogs issues when maybe they should work as hard to find a better dog.

"you dont get disqualified  using "tells".  it will cost you points, but not dq'ed. "  john

"Elmar Mannes, judging tracking this weekend, failed Dean in obedience in the 1990 Nationals in Sacramento, mostly for handler help."  SS, from the 2008 USA Nationals thread.

So, was Dean dq'd for an accumulation of things, or a simply for handler help?

You should train your dog to train yourself to be abetter trainer and should make the tyraining a fun way to interact with your dog.also i liked to say that shutzhund is just a sport not a true way to test any dog's true ability, otherwise it would mean that these dogs are good enough to do shutzhund and nothing else.some one said germans been doing it for hundread years.now you could also argue that if the germanas were doing it right all along why there are so many problems with this breed as i hear it on this board all the time.just because some one doing something wrong for hundread years does not make it right.so like i said do training to make yopurself better trainers and have fun and if u like to trial then this would be another way to test your training abilities. hjave a nice one.

I train so I can learn more about my dog, I train so I can understand her better, so I can learn her limitation, so I can better my self as a dog handler, and so she can better herself and be a true representation of what I and I hope many would consider as excellent example of her breed qualities. I don't trial, because I am not in it for points or titles, I am in it to improve my relationship with my dog, and my own knowledge. That is why I don't stick to one rutine, that is why I don't do dog sports, that is why I put my dog in as many different enviorments as I can. "Real life, real people, real situtaions" are the judge of her qualities. Whatever you decide to do make sure you do it for  yourself and your dog, don't let your ego dictate  your relationship with your dog. Every time we let our ego take over, everything has it's way turn to shits.

MOST PEOPLE DO IT ON THIER BREEDING STOCK AS IT WOULD SEEM TO MOST OF YOU ,,A DOG WITH NO TITLE IS NOT WORTHY TO BE BRED.ATLEAST THATS WHAT I GET FROM MOST OF YOU HERE ,NOT ALL BUT MOST.SO THAT WOULD BE THE MONEY END OF IT.AND IF THE PUPS GET TITLED THEY SELL FOR MORE MONEY.MOST OF THE TIME THATS THE THOUGHT.NO TITLE ON YOUR DOG AND BINGO YOUR A BACK YARD BREEDER. ALL MY DOGS COME FROM TITLED PARENTS.AS I HAVE SEVERAL DOGS MOST OF MY TIME IS SPENT TRAINING THEM FOR REAL LIFE .NOT THE PLAY FIELD.AND WE PLAY ALL DAY.AND ALL NIGHT.I HAVE TRAINED IN THE FINE SPORT SHUTZHUND WITH A PRIVATE TRAINER ONE ONE  IM NO NOVICE TO THE SPORT.SOME DAY I MAY PLAY THAT GAME AGAIN JUST NOT NOW.AND CHEATING WITH TO MANY TELLS WILL GET YOU A LOSING SCORE.AND YOU MAY VERY WELL FIND YOU SELF BEING ASKED TO LEAVE THE FIELD.

Well I don't "play" Schutzund but PSA and it's rare you will see a routine with not one instance of handler help. It's less of a routine and always something sneaky in a trial, impossible to train every scenario you could see. So it is perfectly acceptable to find other ways to comunicate or get your dog where you want him.

For instance we don't have a send out but in the 2's or 3's they could require your dog to go out over a jump flanked by distracting decoys on either side, dog must go threw the tunnel, pool or anything they come up with adn hit the static decoy. If you feel your dog may bite the wrong decoy, it would be fine to down your dog after the jump, walk up behind your dog and then send to the static decoy. You will lose points but at least you will pick up some adn not fail the whole scenario.

Also we don't use only dumb bells, your dog could be asked to retrieve a bottle of rocks, a squishy toy, a bike tire, a wrench, keys, a roll of duct tape, ANYTHING the judge decides on for this trial. So there is no way to chorograph a beautifully perfect routine at the higher levels like in Sch. I few extra commands or walking up to your dog will lose you some points but is better to do than fail all together and teach yor dog he can get away with that at trial.
