Von Willebrands is auto somnal ie not sex linked therefore either parent can be clear carrier or affected. On the other hand haemophilia is carried by the female and the males are affected. Vet gen have a simple cheek swab for von Willebrands but haemophilia is still a blood test as far as I know. In Oz only sons of imported dams have to be tested and any imported males. We used to breed Dobermanns before GSD.

Thanks all who responded so far. Canto is in my males pedigree on both sire and dam side but way back in the 7th generation. He is on my females 7th generation twice on her mothers, dams side. Its nice to know that its been basically irraticated in the GSD lines.

Yeah. Canto Wienerua carried and passed on hemophilia. All-but-eradicated this far down the line, but I'm sure there's still some out there somewhere now and then.

I am wondering, should breeders be testing for this or/and VWD before they breed their dogs? It sounds like there is not much of a chance for it to pop up so would most breeders think the testing would be a waste of money or a good investment, just in case? Also, what are the main health issues that a reputable breeder should be testing their breeding stock for? I mean , besides hips and elbows. Thanks!

Donna, The vast majority of breeders do test (Haemophilia A) their males before breeding... have done for years!
VWD is not known as a big problem in Shepherds... not in the UK anyway! Personally, I have not even heard of one with VWD.
