It does have to be on both sides!

Most GSD's carry the gene as a ressesive and it rears its head on occasion.  I've heard of 2 shortcoats producing more longs than shorts, or 1 long and 1 short only ever producing short.  So its a bit of a gamble.

Even if the SV reinstates long coats, I feel that your male would not go to the top of the show ring. He is somewhat lacking in various departments conformationally. If however he has good drives, there is no reason not to work him. If he has no drives, then he is still a shepherd and a beautiful companion.

You may have some fun round the Open Shows however if long coats are reinstated. That would be fun for you and your dog. If you dont mind me saying, in the second photo, if you cut out his face he could easily pass for a Terv.

This is my opinion, many will have different ones. Enjoy your shepherd. Thank you
