I agree with the "Forced" air dryer....I have one, and I use it every other night on my dogs-----Keeps the hair down greatly.

Also, when I bathe my dogs, I use a rubber "curry comb" like those used for horses(they have them now for dogs, they are called "zoom groom".)  I lather the dogs with this, then rub, rub, rub(scrub, scrub, scrub)....my dogs love it, and it seems to do wonders for pulling out all that dead hair.

Then I dry with my Metro Force Dryer----Did I mention it was the best thing I ever used for grooming purposes....

Speaking of bathing and grooming, think I will go give my dogs a bath....Later:)

I AM DESPERATE

by My Guy Kai on 08 August 2008 - 06:08

Was told by a pro groomer (who was a little bitter about the FURminator I might add...) that for best results, bathe the dog using a shedding shampoo, blow dry the dog, THEN use the FURminator.  That's what they do on the dog and cat used in the ads... the ones laying in front of heaps of hair :)  It really does work well, with or without these extra steps.

I have heard of people overdoing it though, and making patches.  It IS just a clipper blade with a nice handle... for $60.  Shows how desperate people are!

I tried it for the 1st time today & I just love it!!   I have went through so many different types of brushes & tool for our 2 GSD's.  I will never purchase anything else.  I am making a special trip out tomorrow just to purchase one.  Maybe for my mother in law also.  I told her about it & now she wants one!! I got more hair out of our 2 GSD's today then I ever did.  I also loved the fact that hair was not flying everywhere while using this tool.  When I used the shedding tools I am always covered in dog hair when I am done.  I know I will see a difference in our house with the dog hair.  My mom is the one who had me try it.  She has 3 Golden Retrivers...and they shed a lot.  I noticed a difference in her home also.  I know the price is up there...but it is worth the money.  I know I will save in the long run...just by having to replace shedding tools & brushes.  Spending a little extra money is worth it just in getting rid of a lot of dog hair in the home.  Especially this time of year for my dogs when there hair is just coming out in clumps on their back legs.  Our two dogs have never looked better....

I bought 2 Furminators when they were on sale a few months back (large and medium.) Didn't care for them at all with my longcoat. They kept getting snagged in his coat and breaking (or cutting) his hair off. Also, I didn't like the way the Furminator made his coat look so flat. Wish I had taken the money and just paid to have him groomed.

Depends on what you want in your dogs coat. My dogs are all still recovering from my use of the furminator on their coats this summer. It worked awesome for getting ALL the undecoat out BUT because it strips the coat (it IS a blade), the undercoat is growing back unevenly and makes them look unkept as there is undercoat here & there but not everywhere. It's been about 3/4 months. I won't say I will NEVER use it again, but if you want to ever show your dog or if you want your dog to have an undercoat to protect them from the weather (hot or cold), then i wouldn't suggest this tool. I have found the undercoat rake to be more useful for what I am looking for at this point.

As for someone asking if it will pull the knots out of a long coat, yes but it is stripping/cutting it out and will leave bald spots where the snarls were so it IS ripping it out.

love the furminator! works great on my female, but she has a stock coat. I had a plush coat and it was allot of work using it.

for a long coat or plush coat, nothing works better then a slicker/rake & a force dryer.

the blade is just like a #40 blade so it can cut the coat but if u hold the handle in a downward postition, with the blade at an angle, it will do less cutting of the outter coat.

walmart sells a different version of it. works just as good but under $20.00

Renofan2

I had the same experience with all 4 of our German Shepherds. Althought they are not long coats the same thing happen to their fur. The ends were broken off and they looked horrible.
