From A history and description, with reminiscences, of the fox terrier (1895), Author: Lee, Rawdon B:
Tartar's pedigree, as given in the first volume of the Stud Book is open to great doubt, though it is said he was bred by Mr. Stevenson, of Chester, about 1862 from Weaver's Viper out of Donville Poole's Touch. I think there is little doubt that he was a cross-bred dog, for, he was shown at Birmingham in 1863 pedigreeless, and had those who looked after him cared to determine his parentage (or if they possessed it to publish it), they could easily have done so at that time and not waited until the dog had gained a reputation.

From The Kennel Club Calendar and Stud Book (U.K.), Volume I, 1874:

Pedigree: By Weaver's Viper out of Mr. D. Poole's Touch. (N.B. When first shown the pedigree of Tartar, as given in the catalogues, was by Young Venture out of Old Wasp; Young Venture by Old Venture out of Rev. W. Handley's Snow; Old Venture by Mr. Harrison's, of Harrogate, Old Tartar out of Crafty).
Chief Performances: Birmingham, 2nd prize, 1863; 3rd prize, 1864; 2nd prize 1865; Champion prize, 1867; Manchester, Belle Vue, 2nd prize, 1865; 1st prize, 1866; 5th prize, 1871.

This is a dog pedigree, used by breeders and breed enthusiasts to see the ancestry and line-breeding of that individual dog. The pedigree page also contains links to the dogs siblings and progeny (if any exist). For dog owners with purebred dogs this is an excellent resource to study their dog's lineage.
