@ VK4gsd, look closely and you will see that my username is waleed786, look again and you will see that there is another user with the alias waleed. Do you get it?

To the contrary i suppose, lol  'What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet',

Waleed, yes, she DOES look redder to me, now that I see the other photo. However, I've noticed a seasonal coat change in my black and red GSD. She tends to look redder in the winter, and paler in the summer. It's just due to the change of seasons, not what I'm feeding her. I really don't see how what you feed a dog can affect the coat colour It's like saying eating carrots will give you orange hair! What you feed will affect the overall health of the coat. Dogs fed a really poor diet will have dry, brittle, dull coats.

Since you're from S. Africa, I should tell you I'm from Ontario, Canada, where we get 4 very definite seasons in a year. I'm not sure what sort of seasons S. Africa gets, but you are far enough south of the Equator that no doubt you do get a significant change in day length over the course of the year. This WILL affect the dog's coat, as coat growth responds to both temperature and day length. It's also possible the sunshine can fade the colour of the coat during the summertime (which for you, would be our winter.)

Agree ewith SS. Keeping dogs out of the sun and/or using suncreen will also help keep their coats looking darker. The blacks dogs I've had would develop a reddish cast during the summer if they are exposed to too much sun. Fattty acids can also make coat colors look deeper.  IMO it's a combination of food, supplements and limiting direct sun exposure.

You're doing a nice job with her, Waleed. She's really a nice female.

Waleed. That is a a beautiful female. Something stands out from seeing her stack, she is WELL balanced. Blitzen often said more females are better built than males, more athletic, I think I see what she meant and now more aware of that myself. Nice girl.

Thanks guys and gals! my stacking has improved abit due the help received on this very site!

Just another question. My bitch has come into season as well. Would this affect her coat as well?

by waleed786 on 30 November 2014 - 07:11

@ Ibrahim. what i dont like about the pic is that she looks more over-angulated in the rear than what she actually is.
