GSD Daly, hopefully it is true you want to learn and in that case please accept my apology. What made me think you are just baiting is this sentence in your above post, " I was wondering if anyone could explain to me the importance and the purpose of getting my dogs hips X-ray before breeding her?? Is it worth the time and money to get it done? "

Anyhow, we do have here the right people to explain importance of health testing in order to keep the breed in good shape. Good luck.

@GSD Daly - Why are you wanting to breed your dog? Not being sarcastic, but you have a reason and i am curious as to why?

As to the reason for Xrays and OFA ratings, in my humble opinion, it is a great way of knowing what the chances are for a) your girl having hip problems down the road and b) it helps to gage the likely hood of passing bad hips on to the puppies. The GSD has had a earned reputation for a long time of being prone to hip problems and through many types of breed selection testing (hips and elbow ratings are a part of those tests) the GSD as a breed has moved down the list of Hip dysplastic breeds (I believe they are now 40th on the OFA list). the link that one of our admins put up for you is a good read and will help you begin to understand the importance of Breed selection testing.

Lastly, in my experience, this is a board is full very passionate GSD folks. They will help educate you, but know that they have what they feel is the best for the breed in mind. This board will fight back and forth bickering about little nuances dealing with the breed, they will fight when it comes to Show vs Working and AKC vs SV, but in the end the one thing the can agree on is 'responsible breeding'.

I would like to breed my dog to pass along her genes in the german shepherd community because from what I've seen she is an incredible dog but I want to be sure that she is as great as I can see before doing so. And I definately do care about the breed. I hope to bring my dog to shows and have her name and bloodline known. I love my dog and the GSD breed. Also just out of curiosity what is SV?

The SV is the German registration body for the GSD. It sets the standard for the dogs and controls breeding, dog shows, koer tests (an examination that determins suitability for breeding) etc.  Sv approved judges judge internationally at GSD trials and shows around the world.

I probably could have asked that same question 15 years ago. If you don't ask, you won't learn.

We all have to start somewhere!

I still cringe at some of the stuff I wrote/asked when I first came to this board. Red Smile
