Kitkat, I said no kids under 3, 4 unless they have parents who are experienced dog owners. I've seen too many dogs with injuries caused by unsupervised kids with parents who think that dogs should take anything kids dish out. Dogs blinded when pencils were stuck in their eyes, gravel poured into their ears, dogs scalded with hot water, many small breeds with fractured legs. If I had puppy inquiries from a family with  young kids, I made the parents bring the kids along to see how they interacted with the pups. If they were rough and acted like a pack of wild animals, they went home without one of my dogs.

My grandkids treat dogs right too, they were raised to do so, as were my kids. Our rule was - what you do to the dog I do to you. They soon found out what hurt. When I lived in PA some redneck got a Dal from the local shelter. He had it a few days when his 3 year old kicked the dog in the gut and the dog snapped at the kid. He staked the dog in his yard and proceded to cut off his legs with a chainsaw while his genius neighbors watched stopping only to drink a beer. What happened to him? Not a damned thing.

Dogs and kids are not always good matches and I don't blame shelters for having general rules to not adopt rescues to families with young kids. The breed should not make a difference.

IMO a dog must be safe with children and puppies.  It should be an inherited trait.  You don't kill or injure the babies.  If you do, something is wrong with you.  I have always found it to be true in dogs. A dog who injures the young is never right in his head and you'll find that when training them.

Measured response by a horse who is harassed by a kid.  Fair response from the horse I believe.

Idiot videoing should have stepped in first though.

Being good with kids doesn't mean accepting abuse (just wanted to clarify that from my last post).

It's not that the dog won't take it, that's not the point. It's that I didn't want any of my dogs to have to endure wild kids who have had no supervision from their parents about the right way to treat dogs. With shelters dogs there is always a question about their temperament and I don't blame them a bit for being careful about placing dogs in families with young kids.

Are there any GSD rescues in the NYC area that could spring this dog?
