OMG please, is there anyone in physical proximity to this "shelter" who can CLOSE THE DEAL?

It almost appears, this entity is obstructing the welfare of this animal.

Upside: cudos to this shelter for the correct identification of the breed. Well done.

That's what I'm worried about.

"Upside: cudos to this shelter for the correct identification of the breed. Well done."

They do get credit for recognizing a sable WL GSD as a GSD. But Lexi probably would have been better off if they had thought she was a Husky mix. They really badmouth GSDs.

JonRob,
Unless the person at the shelter coincidentally made up the part about SAR, then it is real.
I will check in to this further.

My name is Amber Marks and I am the Founder and President of German Shepherd Rescue Indy Inc (pending 501(c)3, Indianapolis, Indiana. I have received numerous emails and Facebook messages about Lexi. Instead of responding to each one, I created an account on this Forum to address this to the group once. I have spoke to the staff at the Huntington shelter and they will contact me if Lexi does not pass SAR testing. Of course, my hope is that she can be used for work. As with any rescue, time and space is always limited. I read some of the posts highly criticizing this particular shelter. I must be clear and say that I will not publically criticize a shelter who is willing to let me save a shepherd. The culture of my rescue is to not join groups or become involved in any situation which includes negativity. The only further post I will make on this forum is to indicate that I have indeed pulled her. I hope this answers the many questions that I have received. I pray for Lexi as I do for so many GSDs that end up in a shelter through no fault of their own.

Thank you for your understanding and for the interest you have shown Lexi.
God Bless our German Shepherds,
Amber Marks

Thanks, Steve! If it is for real, would you explain how bad the situation is for Lexi so the SAR person takes her no matter what? I can pay to board Lexi for a few days if needed. There are PDB people who want Lexi, and transport can be arranged, so the SAR person would have no problem sending her off to a new home. We can make sure it doesn't cost the SAR person anything.

Amber:
"I will not publically criticize a shelter who is willing to let me save a shepherd."

Thank you for your post. I totally understand this. Of course you can't publicly criticize shelters, because this would make it harder for you to pull dogs from shelters. But PDB users can and should publicly criticize shelters when necessary and appropriate. We're all an important part of the same process. We just do different things, all of which are needed. Without the pressure from this PDB thread, the shelter would have killed Lexi already.

"The only further post I will make on this forum is to indicate that I have indeed pulled her."

Does this mean that you will definitely pull her if the SAR person does not take her? Or just that you will let us know IF you pull her? Your post only says that you have spoken to the staff at the Huntington shelter, they will contact you if Lexi does not pass SAR testing, and your rescue's time and space are always limited. I totally understand if your rescue cannot definitely commit to pulling Lexi, but we need to know this right away so we can make sure Lexi has immediate backup if the SAR person does not take her. Otherwise she will fall through the cracks and die.

JonRob,
I will call the shelter tomorrow to determine the results of testing. If she is not pulled, I will do all I can under the acceptance of the shelter to pull her. If for any reason, she does not pass testing and I am not allowed or able to take her, I will inform you via this post.

THANK YOU Amber! If you do pull Lexi, please let us know right away because we are all very worried about Lexi and because I'm sure your group will get a bunch of donations to help with Lexi's care if you take her. I for one will donate $100 if you take her. Also I will need to know whether your group will want the escape proof crate for Lexi. Thank you again.

I have just now popped back on the forum to see if any progress has been made on Lexi.  So happy to see others getting involved.  My friend, Susan, is still very interested in taking Lexi, should she finally become available.  She is retired, at home every day and has owned GSD's in the past.  She currently has an 9 YO female and would love to have Lexi join her family.  Susan's daughter is experienced in rehabilitating agressive and/or behavioral issues in many breeds.  So, you see, the qualifications are all there.  I have 2 WL GSD's which I trial in IPO and understand the comments regarding temperment.  You could say my male has separation anxiety because he mauls me with licking every night when I come home from work.  He appears agressive to others, yet loves people once I allow him to greet them.  This is a typical GS trait.  Let's keep up the efforts to save Lexi.  Just know that I still have a home for her to go to.  Also, I agree...no shelter bashing.  Not everyone is in the don't care category.
Thanks everyone,
Betty

Thanks for checking in, Betty. Your friend sounds like she would give Lexi a great home. Too bad the Huntington shelter says it can't happen.

The "shelter bashing" is likely the only reason Lexi is still alive. There are more than 5,000 views of this thread, plus facebook posts, emails, tweets, and phone calls, all of which prevented the Huntington shelter from quietly killing Lexi out of sight and dumping her body in the trash. Rescue groups are in a totally different position. If they criticize a shelter, many shelters will punish the dogs by preventing rescue groups from saving shelter GSDs.

It's up to us to say what the rescue groups can't say. I am super proud of the PDB folks for raising a big stink about Lexi's situation. No one is criticizing all shelters, just this one. There are great shelters where people really do care and do not badmouth GSDs.

Please do not forget that Lexi will remain in danger until she is out of the Huntington shelter.
