Why do so many people think a solid dog with good temperament that is social stable is a bad thing???

There are still good dogs, strong with ability, agility, courage, and a proper working structure available. You don,t need to run to Europe to get it that mind set is cultivated by the showers and some upper competitors.

by duke1965 on 03 December 2013 - 16:12

it will not change much as most people already run to breed the points/play dogs to help them sell the pups, and generally speaking these are not the hardest, toughest and strongest dogs around, a wise man once told me, to find the best breeding dogs look for place 10 and down in the big competitions Wink Smile
the good breeders dont need to see todays stickhits in competition to judge a dog.

No, but good stick hits will let people know what they don,t have!

by joanro on 03 December 2013 - 17:12

Commitment in the bite or lack there of is evident before the stick even comes into play. If one wants to see the dog sustain stick hits, go have it worked away from the trial. Jmo

Bob, if you want to see what you have or to show others, do it the way its done in the KNPV, hit the dog hard enough to break the stick, not a padded stick, before the dog engages the helper...if it still goes through that in the proper manner, you may have a good dog.
You can get almost any of the prey monsters competing today to work through a stick pat, but, its the reaction to that hit that matters, what does the dog do after, how does it do it does it push in deeper to the bite, does it suddenly start shifting its bite, etc.
Oh, and why do "so many people" think that a non social or socially neutral dog is such a bad thing? Stable is one thing, social is another and I was asking because that is all that seems to be produced lately, social, love everybody sport dogs...of course, those sell more and faster too...

Joann:
I believe you said earlier that your dog comes off the sleeve during stick hits, Really thats all that needs said.

Hired :
I just had this conversation Sunday with my helper getting ready for the AWD1 I told him that I wanted him to hit her like he was driving rail road spikes!. A good stick hit can be felt and heard all the way across the trial field! It,s a test folks. The dogs still must be tested. My dogs still get reed sticks used on them and we still jump the vertical wall. They all do suit work, I don,t want my dogs coming off in a trial with stick hits!!!

Bob, that dog was a show dog I had, who you will likely be glad to hear died last year. I did not say he "comes off the sleeve during stick hits". I said he came off when I took him for his sch 2. I also said who cares if he came off the sleeve with a stranger. But HE enjoyed "playing" the sport of sch and was fun to work because he was so happy doing it. Yeah, he did come off the sleeve, like I said before, so what, I wasn't titling him to breed him. I was doing it because HE loved traveling and going to training. If you read the part where he came off the sleeve, you were close to seeing the part where I said I was not shocked and that I would not be happy if the stick hits were eliminated so he could pass. So what's your point...he was a GSL. He was NOT one of my WL dogs. But he is dead now, so you don't need to worry what he did.

zdog had it right on the first page of this thread...no one gets to dictate to anyone his or her breeding choices or how he/she trains.  Some people have and will continue to breed garbage and plenty of others have and will continue to breed good dogs.  There are plenty of the latter available if one knows where to look.  At the end of the day, the best of dogs will still not add that extra inch of dick that so many have lacked their entire lives.

I believe Gustav, Susie and Hired dog see a bigger picture than just banning stick hits in IPO.  This is just another smoke screen to ultimately breed out aggression in dogs.  There is already growing concern about banning the use of prong and e-collar claiming any form of aversive training have no place in modern dog training as they do not believe in the four quadrant in operant conditioning.  IPO is seen as a cruel sport.  It will be a shame when real education is halted by unsubstantiated evidence and law.
