Out of this reason we tend to walk these "stallions" around the ring prior to showing; enough time to "calm down".

IMO in every breed standard there are certain requirements that are vital to the dog's function while others are included to set good breed type. I think that tail carriage is probably the later. No one wants to see a GSD carrying it's tail over its back like a husky.

This tail was similar to xbite's picture, but the end of the tail was pointed to the sky rather than falling in a ring like that puppy's tail does. IOW, it was shaped exactly like a fish hook

Small white spot on chest of this black Female like Susie described

The pup we bought to replace her , as she passed away Aug 7 has tiny white spot in same place.

Pup is out of same blood line on top side of Sire  . Only two pups in the litter had the tiny spot in the new puppy.

IMO another thing to look for in a GSD is a "dead tail". Many believe it is a precursor of DM, but I don't think any follow through study has ever been done on that. We see it fairly often in the AKC show ring and I saw it a few times at SV shows.

The white spots often fade, as they did with my dog, Star. At 8 weeks, she had a large white spot on her chest, and white toes on both hind feet:

When I picked her up at 12 weeks, the white had pretty much disappeared, though she does have 2 white toenails on one hind foot:

 

 

I had a pup born with a couple of white toe pads but they are much harder to see now so it looks like they are getting darker, Ive never noticed a solid black pup born with a spot of white on chest fade over time like Sun was decribing with her pup.

Second pic of black GSD with tiny white tuff on chest...there were two in this litter.. No problem with it as it is a small tuff and cannot be found later only a tiny tidbit...FYI been told some  use black dye to hid it in the ring and for Koer exams...lol  or they trim it out with scissors effeciently done so doesnt show ..

This pic was taken first at 6 weeks the other top pic at 7 so you see the difference already in amount of white that got displaced by black...it will always be there but grow smaller as she grows
