Not to mention that all the cites linked and the links from those cites list recycled crumb or mulch rubber as the POTENTIAL problem.

There is nothing in the studies or literature about the sheets or mats or bonded rubber products.

No, clc, I'm not speaking of just "rubber mats" , I'm specifically cautioning the use mats made of Recycled Tire Rubber. No, I'm not saying recycled tire rubber is absolutely the worst thing one can use for their dogs to live on...imo, the absolutely worst thing would have to be treated lumber that contains arsenic, which has been outlawed but is still around from years ago. The carcinogens in tire rubber is worse than cigs, IMO, because one must either light up or breath second hand CIG smoke to be affected. Doesn't matter to me one way or another what you put your animals on. :-) You guys have made your minds up that tire rubber is the next best thing t sliced bread...but not every one is of that opinion and some may not even be aware of the contents in recycled tires or what the stuff is made into...like recycled tire rubber into mats, rugs.

Which at this point there is no literature that says.

a.  the rubber mats are even made from recyled tires

b. that rubber mats are an enviromental/health concern.

All the literature discusses recycled tire mulch as a potential source.

The dairy industry has used cow mats for at least 30 years and it's well know that anything a cow ingests will come out in their milk production and there is no ban on cow mats for dairy production.....

Joan......Fair enough....We'll have to agree to disagree on this topic.

by joanro on 23 October 2014 - 18:10

matt says, "The dairy industry has used cow mats for at least 30 years and it's well know that anything a cow ingests will come out in their milk production and there is no ban on cow mats for dairy production....."

So you fed your cows rubber mats? Or you fed your cows off the mats? Trying to figure out how the cows standing in milking stations on rubber mats would eat the mats. Were the mats made thirty years ago made from recycled tires?

by mklevin on 23 October 2014 - 18:10

The cows are housed in tie stalls where they are chained up in front to a collar that they wear or they live in a free stall barn where they can come and go as they please.  (there were stanchion barns looong time ago). Both stalls use the rubber stall mats to help cushion and protect the joints of the cattle.

The cows are fed at the front of the free stall and tie stalls and the feed spills onto the rubbermats.  Not to mention the ones that like to lick the rubber mats for I have no idea why.

We don't know that the mats made today are from recyled tires.  None of the literature showed that they were.

Because you asked......

Dairy cows on rubber mats

You don't think they lick these mats ?

by joanro on 23 October 2014 - 18:10

Go to ; RB Rubber Products. It might help shed light on this statement by you;

"Which at this point there is no literature that says

a.  the rubber mats are even made from recyled tires"

Cows enjoy licking things with arsnic, such as treated wood because it's salty tasting, and there are probably some salty tasting chemicals in the recycled rubber.
According to the write up by RB rubber, they didn't start cranking out recycled tire rubber mats til the 90 's and 2000's.
BTW, I said "station", not "stantion." Government can't even decide if they care about kids being exposed to tire rubber granules, so I doubt they have considered what may be leached into milk.

by joanro on 23 October 2014 - 19:10

Clc, I didn't say they didn't lick them. Do you know when those mats were manufactured? Do you know how long dairy cows live and do you know if dairy cows get cancer? Do you know why so many kids are allergic to milk nowadays? Do yo know how many hours a day those cows are licking the mats? Do you know how many licks it takes for a cow to ingest carcinogens from recycled tire rubber mats? Do you know if the government has asked those questions about dairy cows a mats ? Chances are pretty good the gov could care less. Me either, I don't drink commercial milk. But I do have dogs that I don't put on tire rubber mats in their daily lives.

Not only is goverment all up into a farmer's business like no one elses, where do you think these farm families that work on these farms get their milk from?  They get it straight out of the bulk tank.

The dairy industry funds extensive studies into all facets of the cows lives to make them more comfortable because a more comfortable cow produces more milk and is more profitable.

Farm families do their best to take care of the cows and they care more than anyone else what comes out in the milk because they are drinking it undiluted.
