The poor guy had third degree burns, his face was swollen so badly he could hardly open his eyes.
How did it happen? "I didn't know black people could sunburn. It's never happened to me before."
The poor guy labored under the [very common] delusion that black people don't sunburn. He paid a heavy price.

As a result, at any given time, there are always at least two containers of sunscreen in my vehicle. I have always found it odd that in a sport in which there are so few blacks, I am almost always the only person at the training field or at a trial with sunscreen!

Mudwick,
You DO know why it is that even black folks are unaware that we can sunburn, aren't you? When is the last time ANY of you have ever seen a black person sunbathing? Ever? I have never, ever seen it in my life. Not even in Minnesota, where folks start sunbathing on the grass as soon as it hits 40 degrees.

Except for a sprinkling of half-latina women.
My girlfriend was fine in the sun as a kid. Spent her summers in Florida and never burned, while the white half of her family got cooked to a crisp. It was assumed that she took after her [black] dad.
Nope. Sometime in her mid-twenties, her skin decided to switch things up on her, and she sizzled her shoulders.
She's like you now, Nia. Copious amounts of sun-screen anytime she is outside.
She's also on my case, so I dutifully carry my sunscreen in my training bag, lest I anger the boss.
