Now, if the OP is trying to say that the dog went on to develop pannus, which is also a disorder linked to autoimmune activity, that's a different story, and all dogs that develop PAF do NOT also develop pannus, nor do all dogs that develop pannus also develop PAF--they are two distinct conditions, and while the conditions certainly can affect a single dog simultaneously, there is no evidence to suggest that development of one of the conditions predicates or increases the susceptibility the development of the other.
And yes, Alkarah, has a very good reputation among the American show line kennels, but like any GSD kennel there will be instances wherein a pup gets a bad hand dealt them during the shuffling of the genetic deck of cards, since the breed itself has within it so many different and genetically complex ailments that can develop.

I, too, have heard good things about Alkarah. When I first was wanting to buy a registered dog, it was one of the kennels recommended to me by someone who's been in the breeding game a long time, but breeds the 'wrong' breed (Cardigans) for my lifestyle. Can't imagine Cardis doing well in deep snow...

I've often thought Cardis look like GSDs with short legs, and that has kind of attracted me to them. But I can't see one doing well in snow, so if I did go for a smaller breed, it would have to be something taller.
I've always liked spaniels and mini schnauzers. My mom had 2 springers that were great dogs, though the coats are a bit high-maintenance.
Geez, does a GSD owner have the right to complain about coats??
