It's understandable that no one wants to take ownership of the dog while it's still at large, as it would place them liable for any damage or harm the dog might cause while it's still at large, or might have already caused. That said, here's my suggestion: Have the owner issue a letter which:
1--authorizes you, on behalf of the owner, to trap the dog and transport it to the LGD rescue folks, and
2--states that upon the capture of the dog, ownership is in turn transferred from the original owner to the LGD rescue folks, in consideration for the service rendered on their behalf [by you] of trapping the animal and transporting it to the LGD rescue.
That way, neither you nor the rescue folks are liable for anything the dog does or has done before being captured, yet ownership of the dog will transfer immediately upon it being successfully trapped.
Try as you might to make it look otherwise, I think you really are a decent chap, vk4gsd.
