people shpuld understand that every dog in Germany , czech etc have to get a sport title in order to be able to breed, so , no title , no pups with pedigree, that doesnot mean they are "sport' or sporty dogs by defenition

every showlines pedigree is full of sport titles, doesnot mean anything about their suitability as well

Problem with breeding for IPO the last 10-15 years or so is the tendency to breed for speed and perfect obedience which have created the more hectic and easliy stressed more reactive dog which also is not so strong in protection many times. But this doesn´t mean all sportdogs are like this just because the owner happens to do sport with the dog, or do competitions with his/her policedog or PP-dog. So basically it´s a question of selecting the dogs for your breedinggolas regardless titles or no sport titles.

But also in "real" work I think it´s a shift in what type is desired, it´s hard to find handlers who want to train a "difficult" strongwilled dog even if such a dog could be excellent in a serious confrontation, so in a way you have to adapt to what the market really wants I guess.

Not all GSDs breedingdogs are sporttitled thou, for example this stud who have plenty of police//military dogs in the fatherline so of course you don´t need sporttitles if sport is not the aim of the breeding and you don´t have to follow for example the breeding-rules they have in certain countries like germany and so on.

Just to set the record I'm not arguing a sport title alone makes a dog breed worthy. But in a country with no real regulations on breeding working dogs its better starting there than trusting one person's opinion. Everyone and their mom here is a "police dog trainer/breeder" and it gets old seeing so many inexperienced people that breed and sell dogs without any outside professional evaluations.

issue not with titles. problem lays in the shift of act itself from test with purpose to evaluate innate qualities of dogs into test and evaluation of trainer/handler skill.

Astrovan, Valk is correct. 50 years a go when Sch was a selection test for working dog candidates, titles had a legitimacy behind them. Today, titles are a test of the trainer's abilities and IPO has become a choreographed routine that some may find strangely beautiful, but, tells you very little about the dog's actual qualities/abilities.

The best outside person to evaluate a potential puppy or adult is the one interested in that animal, provided that they, themselves know what to look for. How many of those do you know?
