How awful! I would first suspect a bacterial variety of mastitus... harder to diagnose with "basic" testing. So sorry for your frustrating heartbreak.

what other variety of mastitus is there and what kind of testing would need to be done?

Grasping at straws here but had the same thing happen with a female and male I used, 1st mating produced 1 dead male pup. second mating produced 3 live females 2 born dead males 1 live male, 5 weeks the male mysteriously died, we sent him in for all kids of tests everything came back negative tissue samples of all organs revealed nothing, Vet suggested possible RH factor with this bitch and dog. Have never repeated the breeding again. and have had healthy litters since.
I am so sorry for you I know how hard it is. But might be worth checking for RH type of issue.
