mandatory means just that - you vote or you get a fine.
not sure which is better, it is a debate here. we have a % of people that just draw funny pictures on the balllot etc so some argue it should not be mandatory and others argue the fine encourages participation which encourages more democratic representation. there are good arguments both ways.
some argue that if a citizen is too lazy and uneducated to bother to vote they should not be represented anyway, personally overall i think it is mandatory is good and i am not very political, at least everyone has some responsibility as to which way things go....but then again....

Mandatory voting just sounds like an oxymoron to me! I mean really! Force someone to choose? How is that a choice then? On penalty of fine? And if you don't have a pot to piss in... talk about the graft opportunity! OMG.... It is bad enough here as it is... those ACORN scandals, blah etc. Heck I don't even want to say it out loud!

bee yr arguments are typical of the debate here - from what i understand US participation is low so it could equally be argued that vote gets low enough it is not real democracy either - i have no answer really.

What it means to me, when the vote is low, is that the one's who have taken the time to understand and care, are the one's able to make a difference. I really would rather have it this way, than by a forceable penalty thing.... I mean.. freedom is also being able to do ... nothing!

moons, having been in both i personally believe our is slightly less so, less violence, less poverty, less hated by about every single person outside yr national borders, more resilient to global economic changes, better education on average (proven), better health care. you guys do have more opportunity to excel as an individual tho becuase the numbers of people doing anything are huge enough to make anything sustainable eg resources for dog training.

bee, i think yr freedom is a lot less free than what you believe. sure we have more regulation but you have more litigation which paralyzes you more in a lot of cases i would argue. just cos you say the word freedom the most "freely" doesn't mean you have it.

I think you have a skewed idea on litigation polarization! Doesn't stop a law abiding citizen at all! It is mostly a bandied threat, easy to toss about, but if one has truth, one is never scared of such .... bullying!

maybe a media illusion but we often here almost comical stories of people pursuing and getting huge pay outs for seemingly the most idiotic things, mental anguish, lawyers following accident victims on police scanners......

Ever have ham and beans with corn bread?
