Travels,
I didn't say anything about Religion being a deterent to criminal behaviour, what I said was,"... being a Christian absolutely does not guarantee one is NOT a sinner and ergo, a lawbreaker."
So, I agree with you on that. What I am saying is, you are looking at the wrong data to make a correlation to morality. To me, it seems you are trying to make an unbridgeable gap between Shtal's evangelical zealotry vs. your calculated atheist outlook, used in this sense as the perfect opposite to Shtal's version of belief in The One God. I find that is what everyone is fighting about here and in like threads, the "moral high ground". Psychopaths and Sociopaths are not automatically considered "criminally insane", please know I am not talking about insane minds, just the genetically different ones that are hardwired without that something needed to even have faith.
You brought up data involving our prisons to support your theory; based on whether it is the choice of believer vs. non-believer that is important, when an incompatable moral choice is deemed by society as offensive or dangerous enough, to be locked up. I don't think that is the main event. I think that is the coincidence. Now, maybe what I wrote before makes more sense to you?
It centers on empathy, that's the key. Now, sociopaths are incapable of empathy or only shallow imitations of empathy, it is a lie to them, yet not every sociopath is a murderer. Why? Certain professions are even said to cater to a sociopathic character, as an evolutionary necessity at just certain times, too.

I was not the one who brought it up, Shtal did. He flings accusations and assertions around with not one bit of data or evidence, besides "The Bible says so.!. And I don't have a problem with HIM believing it and living his life accordingly, but when he is proposing that legislation and schooling should support those views, that's where he crosses the line. If he doesn't want to hear differing opinions, he should keep his to himself!
Now, I have lasagna in the oven and my family is on their way over for dinner, so TTFN

bee, how do you figure that Atheists have less or little empathy? Is there anything that shows evidence for this? In my experience, I find quite the opposite. Religious people have little empathy for anyone who is not in their club. Atheists are the last group to be steeped in discrimination that is still considered "politically correct". Morality has been shown to have little to do with religiosity, so I'm curious as to why you would hold that opinion. How many Atheists do you/have you known, personally? Most don't even let the cat out of the bag for fear of losing a job, friends, family, etc., besides being told on a regular basis that they're going to be tortured for eternity when they are living productive, honest lives. They really aren't evil people, they're just people who happen to believe in one less God than most.
