Parents need to stop ignoring the damage to a young persons' psyche that video games like "Call of Duty" will do with some children; they absolutely CAN encourage the dehumanization that makes killing babies, easy.
If a parent knows their child is dangerously mentally ill, or has a history of violence, they should not keep guns in their home.
No normal civilian, and by that I mean a society loving, type person, NEEDS an assault rifle. They are being sold, obviously, as that type of weapon was purchased legally. Forgive this non-gun owning nincompoop for using the wrong gun terms. Certainly, I am close enough to get my point across.
The right to bear arms DOES NOT NEED TO MEAN the right to BEAR ANY ARMS of any type. Yes, indeed, there needs to be distinctions on what is allowed. I think we call this, "Gun Control" and I am all for it.

If you own guns (like me). You need to be a responsible person.
Everything I own is LOCKED up. Ammunition included.
I have the only keys, not even my wife or daughter have a key.
But most of these crimes are committed by ILLEGAL guns, I'm including stolen as illegal.
The worst possible scenario is to be caught up in one of these events unable to protect yourself.
By the way it is illegal in Mexico for citizens to have a gun. So the cartels run the country and kill people in the thousands every year.
Just about everything said on this thread makes sense.
Good thread Blitzen.

Good post Moons.
Parents should teach their children right from wrong and instill them with morality.

There needs to be more support for mental health. Adam Lanza's mother tried to get him committed to a psychiatric facility but because the law states that the individual needs to be a clear danger to self or others for committment (i.e. have a plan, method, time frame, and clear intent), an adult can not be committed by another adult. Adam found out what his mother was trying to do and we all know the result. It is not about gun control or easy access to guns, it is about mental health and someone who was mentally ill not receiving the necessary care and treatment. It's about lack of support for family members trying to get their family member the necessary treatment. Treatment other than giving a pill or 3 and sending them on their way, I am talking therapy by a competent licensed therapist, there is tons of empirical proof that therapy works better than medication alone. Unfortunately this is the case in most of the mass killings, the perpetrator(s) had mental health issues that were either not treated or treated ineffectively (psychotropics alone). There needs be something other than an emotional knee jerk reaction to this tragedy, too many times there is a bandaid placed on the problem and the underlying wound is not properly dealt with.

Bee,
I find your post disturbing.
You seem to not understand the purpose of the second amendment.
It's obvious as well the public gobbles up these catchy terms like (assault rifle) without even knowing what is real and what is an illusion.
Politicians and the media have done this to them.
Assault rifle has as much meaning as chicken hawk, there is no such thing.
The right to bear arms means just that, it does not discriminate.
No normal civilian, and by that I mean a society loving, type person, NEEDS an assault rifle.
Idiotic.

Here is the most famous video promoting the right for concealed carry.

Mindhunt, you assume that these media dispensed stories are true. Often they are planted. This investigation has been locked down by Homeland security and ALL information is completely controlled under "national security".
What you say about commitments is true for most statges but it is not proven that this information attributed to this situation is true at all.
there are so many lies and loose ends spoken by the police so far that must be cleared up. Where are the two men arrested at the scene (maybe a third two). There are videos and eye witness reports. Why were they let go? And there is so much more. This whole story has so many problems and covered up aspects it's rediculous. Don't fall for it.
Unless you know the family personally, do not assume any of this so-called background information is true. There are numerous examples where the media has unwittingly broadcast planted, staged stories and purchased advertising stories not identified as such.
There are intel experts who are posting their view of what really happened based on inside information but it is not appropriate for this forum so I'll pass on it. If folks dig perhaps they can find it.

My first post was how to prevent this kind of problem, all of these bad people were some bodies children once.
If you asked me how to stop one I say by whatever means available, if this means a gun fine, it could also mean a fire ax, whatever's handy.
A gun can be very handy in the hands of the right person, not all people are the right people to carry guns.
The more people who carry the better the chance that one of them actually have the skills to use it.

the drug cartels seem to be using ak47's (7.62) or .50 cal. barretta, etc . quite frankly, the ar 15 (.223 or 5.56) is out-gunned by either of these.
the only thing the ar15 has to offer above these is that it is extremely accurate. what i am saying is that if you are going to own a gun for
protection, you have to have something fairly close to what you might be attacked with, otherwise it is pointless. a .22 rifle or handgun is
not going to stop a perp unless you hit something vital.......pretty hard to do if they are moving. just sayin'
