There are a lot of companion dog owners (and sadly, breeders) who don't really work their dogs or have never earned anything official so I can see how they would be proud of a BH. It isn't really going to impress working dog people and it definitely won't convince anyone to run down to their local AKC show for their next dog. But hey, good for them. Did any of his progeny go on to do anything notable?

Consider this...CH John Doe von Fantasyland SchH3. Doesn't change who the dog is. It's what's in the dog, not the titles that make him. Yeah, titles and a venue are needed to test each dog, but it doesn't define him. There are dogs in my opinion that have nothing but paper behind them. The best dogs aren't always the ones on the podium either. You can stare at pedigrees and titles all day long, but it doesn't tell you much about the dog. Go to the Nationals once. All of them are SchH3 and most have very similar lines, but none of them are the same.

nona, there is no doubt in my mind that you know better than to take up for the Am. s/l. You wouldn't be going in the direction you are now if you felt there was any hope.
You may need to try what has worked well for me. I keep a framing hammer next to my computer. When I have a good thought about the Am. dogs, I just give myself a couple of good whacks in the head. I thought about counseling and pain therapy, but my insurance wouldn't cover it and so far the hammer is working.
Suzzane did pass away recently. She was very concerned about character and involved with the German dogs.

I dunno if I'm following this correctly....I can only get to visit the site every couple of days so I miss out on a lot of stuff.....but Nona saw an Am SL dog from the not too distant past that looked like maybe it's owner was trying to bring it along to Schutzhund....the dog had it's BH, after acheiving all the usual AKC titles....& the dog died young, possibly from something that prevented it from going any further.........& understanding that this dog would never, (except in a Disney movie), have blown away it's Schutzhund competition; it's nice to see that owner was working with his dog, trying to acheive something.
I guess, really, ANY dog can be trained at Schutzhund, with varying degrees of sucess. And KUDOS to any who do, 'cause at least they are working with their dogs. It doesn't mean the dog is then a working dog....does it?
If I trained my Hairless Chi to acheive a ScH3, you wouldn't want to breed to that standard, but I'd still get to be proud of the little ugly cuss, wouldn't I?
And I'd sure like to know what the dogs innumerable titles all meant...some I know, but wth is a BISS?

jackie, nona has quite a bit of experience with Am. s/l. She is not novice in GSD and not a dummy.
Could be wrong, but I think she likes to play devils advocate and provoke discussion.
always confused,

Rik - You are right, Nona is "no dummy."

by Kalibeck on 18 February 2011 - 21:02
Sorry, I wasn't trying to paint anyone as a dummy. And I'm glad Nona has experience with Am SL. I don't, really. I was just try to say, good for those who work their dogs, whatever they may be. Guess I shoulda just kept my Big Mouth Shut! Chow-chow, baby! jackie harris

Rik, you are right ....I am not taking up for the AM S/L......I would NEVER go back to that....I will not promote, push or breed it either.......I would never own another Am S/L again......Actually I had been offered an awesome sable male that has already been finished, and has produced that are really nice and have potential to win..........The idea was to breed it to our working line girls...I kindly did not accept the offer....I am glad you do truly know me Rik......I'm flattered you admitted that and made the nice comment... Some of these people think they know me...
However, as I am sure you and most others realize that the original post proves that not ALL Am S/L GSDs are worthless....There some people on here that describe the Am S/L as they ALL have no ability at all, but to run around a ring looking pretty, ..Sadly most of them are like that...I just wanted these people to see they are not ALL that way.....
I think the post, to some was like a slap in the face after the comments made....Also I did not intend trying to be the devil's advocate.....As with any thread I post, certain people get their jollies from questioning everything I post and comment on.......This thread was alot worse.........Last night it had 71 comments posted....Thanks to the moderator for doing a great job. Many of the really ugly, pointless, and nonsense comments were deleted.....Including mine....I say GREAT job moderator....
... At least my point was made....
Again....GREAT JOB MODERATOR......Keep up the GREAT effort!!!

Jackie, no problem......I was not offended by your comment......Had I been looking for an argument, I surely would have jumped on that.....LOL.....
To answer your question about what BISS means, it means Best In Speciality Show...

jackie, as I said in my post, I did not read the thread And I certainly did not mean to dispute you. Please don't keep your mouth shut. My post was in no way directed as an insult to you.
It is just that I do know nona and her experience very closely parallels mine. I know what she did in Am. s/l and feel she is here now for the same reasons I am. She showed in shows that I sponsored. Also her partner at the time. I also showed many times in her area.
She is an acquaintance, not a close friend or partner and I'm sure she will say the same about me.
many here make the assumption that because we Am. s/l folks are late to the party with German dogs that we are clueless as to what a GSD is. I am willing to bet that people like nona and myself had GSD in the U.S. before most here were able to wipe their own bottoms.
