Always wanted an Oldenberg myself, but way out of my price range.

by eichenluft on 17 August 2010 - 16:08

I was lucky 18 years ago when I bought my mare - she was newborn when I bought her, and she was born where I worked - so I got her for a very good price.  Since then I've been offered high-5 figures for her (pretty much anytime I have one of her foals for sale, I have offers for my mare).  She turned out to be a VERY nice mare, but as with all babies, crapshoot if you get them that young.   I knew the instant I looked into her eyes (the minute she opened them for the first time) that she was mine.   You are right though, buying a warmblood of any kind is not normally "cheap".

For normal "pleasure" riding though, nothing beats a good working-line Quarter Horse.  I have one of those too, and looking to buy a weanling - prices range from $500 right now for very good registered QH weanlings.

Molly,  I meant to write Oldenburg- my brain just wigged out on me :( .  Sleep deprivation will do that to me!  I went back and corrected my post.

Molly,
congratulations! That proves that your mare is a top producer, a gem! I have seen the place where the sire Sempatico is located in Lovettsville. Where did you go for the event? Bluemont again?
Oldenburg Horses are beautiful. I came very close last year to bidding either on an Oldenburg, a Trakehner or German Riding Pony yearling in Germany. They have these annual auctions in Germany, as a matter of fact the Oldenburg auction is in 10 days in Vechta and the Trakehners in three weeks, both for Premium foals. I even had Joe call Lufthansa to get airline shipping quotes and then decided to wait a few more years until Nina is older and she can prove that this is what she wants to do.
Instead we bought the most wonderful 15 year old mare who is already schooled to Dressage Level 2 and is like a pet - comes when called, follows us without a lead rope on, not a mean bone in her body. A wonderful foundation bred Morgan (not the fancy gaited show Morgans, lol). At least Morgans have spirit and are lively, not like QH. Sorry, I don't want to offend anybody, lol.

another congrats Molly.

and I really hope this thread does not turn into another "show" Morgan vs. "working" Morgan war.

Silbersee,
Trekeheners are my favorite I plan to have one in the next year Oldenburg's are Awesome but the movement and looks on a Trek is absolutely phenomenal !! Congrats Molly you have earned it, great horses and great colors.

Morgans are awesome if you like a smaller horse, very sturdy with spirit and "fire", very sound, good bone and feet and very healthy, long-lived, beautiful but not so refined (and flighty/stupid) as an arab.  I like Morgans.  Just like my "good old Quarter Horse" for quiet trail rides and get up and go, but then stop again sort of temperament LOL - you don't normally have to worry too much about fire and spirit from a QH, except in short bursts LOLOLOL

Here is my QH gelding on a trail ride a few years ago, with  my Eagle by my side as he always was -
