"The temp was only 86 when we set out for our gaiting work today. the dogs pulled for about 2 miles and only stoped when I couldn't take it any more. The last 100 yards or so was a fast gait to the car. I though my heart was going to die. The dogs were just fine, though they were quiet for the rest of the evening. I sure hope they will be in good enough shape for the show. I've heard that some judges will have them circle for a good long time just to wear them out and then aske them to pick up the speed. Guess it doesn't really matter much any more if they're not in good enough shape, its too late now.

How much gaiting is enough, how much do you do before a Seiger show?
What other ways do you prepare a dog for gaiting in the show?"

Hey it's going to be 90s here today (and humid) and we'd planned to train running multiple blinds tonight, yikes!  For the SS it will depend on the age of the dog, the judge, and the class.  For the little puppies a lot of it is just a formality, but as the classes get older, there is more running and sometimes it takes a long time b/c if there are lots of entries the judge will split the class.  Make sure the double handler or someone has water available so you can jump in and water the dog at every opportunity (but not give too much that they feel sick).

The main thing besides learning the double handling and getting the dog gaiting correctly is 1) getting the dog to look into the ring, not out, and 2) keeping the ears up at all times.  1) means most people double handle by staying a half ring or more ahead of their dog, so the dog will look across the ring rather than outside of the ring.  My dog is super crazy for me, super handler (me) focused so we double handle him by having me and my breeder or my husband each in an opposite corner and we just call him when the handler cues, I am able to stay completely out of sight or it's too much for my dog.  Other dogs like the handler in sight or even waving a toy but it's important to figure this stuff out ahead of time, learning if you hide or not, how far ahead to be, who calls when.

Also make sure the dogs are OK with being stacked (they do not need to self-stack but should not throw a fit being touched) and OK with having teeth, tattoos, and testicles checked.

To get my dog in shape I have him carry which means I will walk him a few blocks away from home, put a toy in his mouth, and let him gait out ahead of me back home.  Holding the toy gets him to hold his head nice and high.  He knows this activity now so as soon as we get to a certain stop sign he grabs the toy and heads back for home.  It helps me get and him get in shape.  I can't run for miles b/c I have athritis but if my husband goes running, I have him take the dog a few times a week.

Liesjers
They are in  6-9 and a 18-24 month...
Thank you for explaining the process, I'll have plenty of water on hand.
It was 93 today and with high humidity again, at least we had a bit of a breeze.
Where did spring go?
