Don~ That was AWESOME!!! HAahahaha!! (Water Boy)

KC,
I never even thought to bring up weight pulling to her, but I'm curious to hear what she says about that when she reads this.

I can hardly hold my 65 pound dog on a leash during training, I cannot even imagine trying to hold back a Saint, if she had one drivey or aggressive enough to work with ;-)

Are you guys kidding me? Ivan couldn't get great scores with a showline GSD. You're going to think someone totally new to the sport is going to do SchH with a St Bernard? I love it! That's funny. 90% of the newbies that come out with good dogs, quit after they realize how much time and effort are required. You're going to advise a newbie to do it? YOU CAN DOOIT!!! I would rather wrestle alligators with morning wood and both arms tied behind my back!

Where do see people advising her to do it? Did I miss something?

DON my dear:

There are women and men all over the usa who do SchH with cocker spaniels, airdales, pits , Yorkshire, you name it. Now to ask how many have the title, I guess someone who works where the records are could tell us..

Norm  no   possibility , yes.

I want a pic here of you with your arm tied behind your back,   working a dog.  I will hang it by my C B Barber print in the sunroom.   lol

heck with the aligator, or do you have a pet one in your pond?

lol

YR

I will send Tony Romo to help you!!!!!! or many   Barber!

He can use his hair to tie the gators mouth shut!!

I'm not and have never said it cannot be done. Look at Murphy the JR terrier. Sure it can be done, but I wouldn't advise a newbie to find the best SB it could find and do the sport. If she came to my club and we evaluated the dog and thought that it could possibly do it, fine, but I would be honest and tell her how hard it is with a dog suited for the sport.

She already gets it.. I think.   But I would try it only if I had it eval. and if not I might go buy one that would..

Surely, V R knows  her friends dog is probably not suited for it.  Take it to a club meeting and see.

Would certainly be a good conversation piece here on our forum...Something new anyway.   The Miracle  St. Bernard.

Stacy can work it for her!   Be sure to take pics of the day you do this..

If this is an older dog I would not..  I am not sure the age was revealed.   that is why I said if she is serious go buy a pup... Then imprint it . Starting an older st. b may not work.  who knows.   Put just a tracking title on it.

lol

I just see too many people struggle with offbreeds.

My money would be on the helper in the escape bite.  If PROPERLY executed, many GSD's would be outrun.  There should be lines marked on the field for "Dog Start" position, "Helper Start" position and "Helper End" position.  If the dog has not engaged by the time the helper reaches the "End" line, the exercise is to be terminated.   A friend of mine was doing helper work at a trial under Bogdan Sergo and was told to slow down, that he was running too fast.  EXCUSE ME???  Running too fast???  The exercise is an "escape", not I'll run a couple of steps, wait for you to hit me and then run some more.  My guess is 99% of St. Bernards would not be able to execute a properly performed escape bite.

LOL YR... I can hardly handle my own dogs...no Saint training for me ;-) Tracking I wouldn't mind watching her do though. I bet she'd like it.

I wasn't at all encouraging my friend to "go for it" with one of her Saints, we were just wondering if there have been any that have done it and were successful. If so I highly doubt the scores were impressive. I searched You Tube for quite awhile and found NOTHING and Googled and also found nothing...

So the best she could hope for would probably be a BH and Tracking titles, by the sounds of it. And I imagine she's have to start with one of her puppies, when she has another litter and probably have the entire litter evaluated...

I see what you mean Don, though about a newbie (even more new than myself) handling such a large dog, not made for the sport becoming disatrous!

A friend of mine from here mentioned awhile back, that one of the big differences in AKC obedience and Schutzhund ob, is the heeling, so if she did start the pup or dog in SchH style heeling, it would probably be unfair as well as confusing for her dog to go back to AKC style heeling, if she didn't succeed in anything further than a BH...

So maybe BH, OB Tracking and possibly search and rescue could be some fun activities for her then?
